Good luck with the 10k run.

I started about 2.5 years ago. I've been running regularly each week - just ticking over to maintain base fitness. I did the Auckland half in 1:38 in 207 and that was on an unknown, undulating course. I've started training earlier this time and will slowly ramp up. Also mixing in some sprint and hill work unlike last time. The biggest threat to the wellington will be wind. A strong northerly or southerly will make evans bay pde a challenge (although some respite around the various bays there).

Sounds like you're doing really well! You'll go under 1:30 by the sounds The Wellington course is dead flat, just tuck in behind someone for the headwinds.
I'd like to be at your level in a year or two! Been running for about the same time as you, my best for the half is 1:48 in Napier, nov 08. Come a fair way since then, endurance wise (not speed wise)... was running around 2 hours total a week then, now its 4 to 6hours (2x 1h or so midweek and a long 2-4h weekends). I follow Lydiard's methods.

10K race today was good, did it in 47:20 (to be confirmed), little disappointed with the lack of pace i had to be honest but i'll get over it pretty quickly Twas only a fun run after all and i've done no speed work since before the Napier half last year. Starting speed for Wellington next week.

47:20 is good in my book, especially if you have been working on endurance.

I find I can sit at around 4:30 min kays comfortably, but losing that extra 12 seconds per k I need to finish in 1:30 is that much harder. I work on the principle "it's gotta hurt like hell", so I just push myself.

Have you heard of or read any of Dean Karnazes books? His ultra marathon man book is brilliant. Puts your own little running issues into perspective and makes you try that much harder.

The Auckland half I'll always lament. Not knowing the course I had done 19km at the 1:30 mark... finished the last 2 sub 4 minute each (all adrenaline I assure you!).

This time I'm going to run the half a few times before the actual race. I think the secret is to psychologically know you can run the distance....

I'm using town to just beyond lyall bay and back for the long run (about 18ks) so will stretch another 3 ks.

You might want to watch out for cops while running over the harbour bridge against oncoming traffic, then.

At least they're flat, eh. As is, in fact, the whole second half of the marathon, come to think of it. I assume Mr Fruit is going to come up and do Auckland later in the year; perhaps I'll do the half again and try and improve my stunning PB of 2:18 from 2006.

I did Kerikeri in 2:09 three weeks later; that's a nice fast course.

Yes, i've read Dean Karnazes's Ultramarathon Man, what an animal he is! I'd like to do some ultra marathon distances after iron man next year.
haha, i know what you mean about finishing fast, the energy comes from what seems to be an empty tank! Hurts a little bit for a few minutes after the finish line
Keep up the good work training, will catch up with you on the day.

hehe... I don't think they are planning a bridge over Wellington harbour. Well the rate they complete roadworks around here it certainly wouldn't be done for years.

Do any of you have a link to a good on-line training schedule?

ie. enter your target time and weeks left to the race and it works out training distances, days and types of runs etc...?

    Question Errrrr

Ummm. I was planning on running the 10kms but I think I might have left my training a little late now. What do you running types think?

I confess I'm very unfit and haven't run in ages.
My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

You can do anything, within reason, you put your mind to. Completing the 10k is most likely quite a reasonable goal. You have left it a bit late for an optimal build up to this particular event but don't let that stop you... Train smart in the time you have, start out with a really short run (or run/walk), recover from that, repeat, etc.

How long since you've run? How much and what sort of running we're you doing?

Make sure you're in some proper running shoes if you do start training again, not cheap but worth it to prevent injury.

Yes I thought I'd left it a little late. I downloaded a timetable from the Internet and was supposed to start the week we had all that really shit weather and now I'm just procrastinating!!

Honestly, it was a years back. When I was running it was more jogging, quite slow but I'd get there! I walked a half marathon a few years ago and surprised myself by being so disciplined and committed to my training.

The hardest part is making the decision to go out for a run.
