I just did it!! I walked briskly for the 1st 10mins and the turned around and jogged back! Took my running partner with me and she appeared to enjoy it
My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

I confess I'm very unfit and haven't run in ages.
I started training for the Auckland 1/2 with only 8 weeks left. I managed a respectable time. Sure I had a base level of fitness, but up to that point I'd never run more than about 14kms.

It depends on what goal you want to achieve. If you just want to run the 10km without walking any part then with 8 weeks left 10km is definitely achievable. Get yourself a programme (try some of kiwifruit's links or www.marathonrookie.com - I think there is a 10km run training schedule for returning runners / beginners).

You can definitely do it. Start tomorrow... once you've begun you'll find out how much easier it is to just continue. Get that drill sargeant out in your head and tell yourself you have to run. Works for me (I've had problems in the past with little voices, so it was quite easy to engineer a drill sargeant personality )

Myself and a flatmate are planning on entering the half this year... we have both been doing some pretty intense (read: steep hills) bushwalking since the start of the year and have recently taken up running now that the weather is no good for going bush - so we both have a pretty decent level of fitness now. I've started training for the event and will have to do some long runs to ensure I can hack the distance (otherwise I'll enter the 10k).

The better looking Brazilian other half, Maria, has sucked me into opening my big mouth about how good I was at running during my 10yrs in the Army and trapped me into stepping up to the start line with her for this event!

    Damnit!!

So since last week I've been out running every second night to try to get back to my old RFL pace of 2.4km/8mins. Yeah right!

As long as she doesn't creme me I'm going to be happy!

    We are doing the 10km

Oh and her handle on here is Maria as well.

Hope everyone's training is going well
I also hope there will be an establishment selling refreshments open somewhere, post race, this year!
