Normal for 50cc scooter in cold mornings?

hi all, i've got a Lifan 50cc scooter as many may already know, it has broken down last week but was fixed, now it runs fine.

Except in cold mornings, like today, for the first few minutes it is really choppy (if that's the right word).

I let it warm up for approx 5 minutes before driving, the first piece of flat road it does not want to go above 25km/hr, the more I twist the throttle, the more it slows down.

Then gets gradually better, the choppiness goes away after about 1-1.5km.

Afternoon coming back from uni definitely better, hardly any choppiness to start with.

This is normal right? I know I should ride softly to start with when it's cold, I just didn't expect to be this slow when cold.

Sounds like the choke isn't working properly.

I have a suzuki and it goes great guns even when there is a heavy frost. So perhaps you should have a look at the choke.

This morning it's -3C here in Christchurch. My wee little scooter is frozen over. Again. It might have problem starting when frozen, but once it starts it goes like normal. I don't really have a choice to ride it slowly before it warms up since the road right outside the house is a busy road, but she can do 50km/hr with no problem.

I'm feel highly embarrased saying this..

This morning it broke down AGAIN!!! Was cruising at about 60km/hr near Newmarket on Gt. South Road. It started losing power, throttle wouldn't work and gradually slowed down to a stop.

Then throttle has no effect what so ever, the thing would not budge, turned it off and won't start again.

Different symptoms from last time though, no noise this time, when i try to start it up it sounds like its trying to start but no fuel in the engine, and throttle handle has no effect.

After fixing it this time, I'm definitely getting rid of this piece of cr*p.

check the fuel lines? couldn't hurt, they may have bent or snagged somewhere

Wheres it broken down at the moment? Im just off great south road before newmarket and have all the tools you'd need to fix

Cheers for the offer but i've already called the mechanic who fixed it last time and he'll pick it up from there if he hasn't already.

I also think it's the fuel line or something related, as the throttle handle has no effect, when I try to start it it sounds like its trying to start but only the electric sound and no gas.

Sell it, get a jappa. If you are rich you can get a brand new suzuki AZ50 for only $2k.

Other option- I brought my 1992 Suzuki Sepia for only $100, just had to clean out the carby, put on a fuel filter and away I go!

I'm not selling somthing, I am just illustrating some of the bargins you can get when you buy a second hand scooter.

Fuel filter, clean the carb, new points if it has em ! And it will prob give ya no problems till it next needs a tune !

Just kidding mate. Know what you mean with second hand bargains. If not for the urgency when I was in the market for one, I'd get one off Trade Me. I know for a fact the moment I ride my scooter out of the shop, its value will drop by 20%...

... which was why I'm reluctant to buy a brand new VL250. I'm not in a hurry to get one, so I'm looking around

I didn't get mine off trademe, my mate used to live in this real massive flat, and there had been this scooter sitting in the garage for ages. I asked my mate about it and he said it was his flatmates and it didn't go. I asked his flatmate if he was interested in selling it, he said yes, I said how much? he said make me an offer. I said well how about 100 bucks? HE said sweet as, I got the money picked up the scooter, cleaned out the carby and away she goes!
