    Thumbs up

I went for a quiet cruise with a mate last night. me on a Katana and him on a 250 Burgman. I was really surprised at how well the 250 went. Accelerated quite quickly, cruised easily at 120k, sufficient power to overtake and topped 130k.

Part way through the ride we changed bikes. A lot of fun. Firstly I had trouble pulling out from the gutter as I didn't have enough revs and didn't want to over rev it. A slight push off and I was happy. Once it was going it was definitely like a scooter to ride, a very upright riding position. After riding the Katana it seemed strange to have the feet in front with no thigh support and the handlebar seemed very close. The small tyres were very noticeable (a little bit of movement) but the smoothness and quietness blew me away. This must surely be what an electric bike is like ride, speed just continually increasing past 100k at a reasonable rate. Awesome wind / weather protection with just a little bit of fairing noise. A very low centre of gravity so probably very stable when used the rider is more used to it.

Riding the Burgman was a lot of fun and I am sure I would enjoy one of these in the stable. I must try out a 400 or 650. I'll keep the Katana as my preference but this is definitely on my to do list. I think the wife would also be happy with this.

The 400 is much nicer to ride. Not half as thirsty either as the 250. The 250 we had briefly, while our 400 was in for a new clutch, was as thirsty as a 650.
The 400 isn't half as upright either, making it a lot more comfortable.
It's only when you take the piss out of a partially shaved wookie with an overactive 'me' gene and stapled on piss flaps that it becomes a problem.

The 400 is good on the gas. Took mine through the Northern Gateway last week and the display showed 71 miles/US gallon equating to 84 MPG or over 31km/litre. Based on a 85 mile ride start to finish. Around town I get 60-65 miles/USG.

The best I have done on mine is 31.4 km/l for 15kms, that was as long as I could take riding 80-90kph (indicated) and then I had to give it some more throttle and pass the van. Normally I only get around 25-26 km/l because I like to move at a reasonable speed.

I think that would compare well to pretty much any 650cc motorcycle, I've talked to guys riding fast sports bikes and they mention figures like 17km/l - compared to that 22km/l is pretty decent. You also need to consider that it is a 650cc machine capable of exceeding 160kph (actual speed with is much better than the overly optimistic indicated speed, the speedo will probably get up to 180kph), you can't really expect it to be more economical than a 250.

    BTW
I also ran up over 1000kms this weekend - now I will have to do my 18,000km oil & filter change. That is over 14000kms run up in less than 6 months, I hope I don't wear the poor thing out.

My 400 does 26km/l, two up, with enough of the missus' shit to fill under the seat and a 46l top box. Steady 120/130 up and down the motorway.

At a similar speed and load, the 650 we had did about 16km/l. Now, this is probably fine if you only use it for nipping around. But we do 2000km a month, and that's a huge amount of extra cash on fuel, for no real gain.

For the none euro types amongst us, that's 71mpg on the 400 and about 45 (50 once) on the 650.

Hi there, I've only just joined Kiwibiker, and was wondering if you formed this club, and when you meet for runs etc? Thanks, Mike
