Remember scooters aren't toys

This was in my email today.
Maybe the Wellington crowd will start wearing some sort of protective gear on scooters? (yeah right)

I always wear at least my armoured jacket, Qusi back protector, gloves, and full face helmet on my 50cc.

(But we don't know the full story about this crash yet, and for all we know they were both in full race leathers)

Incident type: Serious Crash

Police are calling for witnesses to a collision between two mopeds to coome forward. The crash occurred shortly after 7pm on Thursday 15th May 2008 on Calabar Road Rongotai Wellington .
A male driver aged 56years is in ICU Wellington Hospital The other driver a 22 year old female was also taken to Wellington Hospital.

This story is in Stuff. Was really interesting hearing the reaction of my team today when I told them about the article.... One of them laughed at first and said ah well they'll be OK after all they were only on scooters and they're sooooo much safer!!! So I said to her, if you're riding a scooter at 50 k's and ya crash with no protective gear you're telling me that they will walk away unscathed cause they were riding a scooter? She said YES! So I said to her what if I crash my little bike without the gear on, whaddya reckon will happen to me? She said that id probably end up f*cked up! LMFAO, people are funny!!

According to the newspaper, it's a Scooter vs Motorbike.
No info on who was on what etc.

A V-Moto and possibly a PGO (according to someone who saw the news last night...), although stuff reports one as a motorcyclist. The 56 year old male has now died.

RIP - no one on two wheels is above or safe from injury.

I wear every bit of gear I've got every time I'm on the bike...wouldn't be any different if I were on a scooter.

Have to say I think some people on scooters are terribly naive given their choice of clothing. I've seen a woman wearing fricken high heals and her business suit...but it's ok - she did have a helmet on and we all know those make us invincible eh?

The man involved was wearing full gear but his is now died, he was a dear friend and work college and will be dearly missed.

Just because they were on scooters doesn't mean they had no gear on.

Both could have been in full race leathers for all you know.....

Yeah yeah you or someone or whatever already said that...

I was actually commenting on Str8 Jackets teams comments about how SAFE scooters are perceived to be and making a generalised statement in reference to my own personal observations of the scooter riders I've seen blatting around town.

If it is naive for scooterists to wear little in the way of gear given, as you say, a perception scooters are safe, then it must be sheer stupidity for bike riders not to wear full race leathers as the danger must, by inference, be universally know.

My personal observations are that bike riders wear some of the stupidest gear. But then, like yourself, I am probably on the lookout for a particular lunacy

No one is right and no one is wrong. Your getting emotional about someones opinion. Wether its because you prefer scooters over motorbikes or even if you're just over-sensitive it doesnt matter. What does matter is personal responsibility. People make a decision to wear what they wear. It sounds to me like this poor bloke may have been killed no matter what he wore. Out of respect for the fact that someone has died I think that emotional responses should be kept to a minimum on this thread. Discussion is good but judging is bad. This is however my opinion and I accept others views may be different.

Yup I've seen some dumbass bike riders too wearing fark all.
Don't get it myself - couldn't relax without all my gear on all the time.

Looking out for a particular lunacy? Doubt it, I am tuned to all forms of lunacy - people are strange! Couldn't really care less what others do or don't wear, I just think they are mad and find it hard to fathoms. Bit hard too not to notice a woman atop a scooter in full business suit, no gloves (cos that would ruin the nails prolly) and high heels when you pulled up at the lights next to them.

Again as I said in my earlier post NO ONE ON TWO WHEELS IS ABOVE OR SAFE FROM INJURY.

Nah - I only get emotional about where my tax dollars are spent

And I see that Number One has caught the tone of my post - we actually agree
