I'm currently catching the Devonport ferry while jrandom has my bike and find the ferry to be on time (ie they get quite shitty if you are running to catch it and you are holding them up from leaving on time). I'm only a 10 minute walk from the Ferry building so I'm not too sure on the buses I'm afraid.
I find the ferry quite a nice experience, considering I used to be afraid of boats. However, its quite expensive, I'm currently paying $35 for a ten trip ticket. But I prefer it over a bus as that way there is no traffic and its a quick 15 min trip.
If I can't get a lift in I catch a ferry and then a bus, since I'm a short walk from the terminal. The ferry is a bit pricey, but much nicer than catching a bus into town, more likely to show up on time than a bus, and quicker to get there. The connecting bus is hit or miss since bus schedules seem to just be a suggestion of when it might get there/leave.
OoOoOoOoOoOo ... THE FERRY! Yay.
The ferry is eminently more enjoyable than sitting in traffic on a bus across the bridge.
I'm looking forward to being back on the North Shore again for a while (after this weekend) ... just so I can get the ferry to work.
The buses at the Devonport end tend to be there waiting for you when you get off, although it can be a bit hit and miss about whether they arrive in time for the ferry which is departing, you always seem to have to run for it, or are watching one sail off into the distance.
I'm assuming that bus services in Auckland are still pretty arse, though (waiting for a bus at the Britomart used to be a pain, if I remember correctly). Possibly I walk everywhere more now than I used to: you tend to get in the habit of walking a lot in London, its easier than sitting in traffic - although London is considerably flatter than Auckland![]()
When I was here last, I tended only to work walking-distance from the ferry buildings ... although I have been known to walk halfway up Symonds St to the University, or to Diagnostic Lab when I was working there the long distant past.
I've always liked catching the ferry - its a throwback from when I was a kid (when we used to get the bus down there on a Sunday afternoon and see how many times we could go back and forth before the crew noticed we hadn't got off, and kicked us off)![]()
No I am not a Pom - I just sound like one ...
I dont catch it. Never caught it. never been on one.
