Hi Ken,
thanks so much.. so did you get top end rebuild parts from deus themselves or go through japan etc?
did you end up buying an sr from japan in the end? or did you buy an sr500 from NZ? because they're older models do you need to get them complied in australia?
i know vanem do awesome modification stuff but im looking for a stockish sr400/sr500 to use as a daily rider that i can customise over time as i just came from a 2 year resto project on a mini (my first foray into mechanicals) still very green and hence was looking for a reliable mode of transport in a bike but something i could really enjoy customising.. i love the cafe racer movement as well as the classics such as enfield/bsa inspired looks..
whereabouts in aus are you based?
do you still have the sr? any picks of it done?
hey - i'm in auckland - but have bought most of my bits through australian resellers.
as to top end stuff i haven't bought any as i have a new rebored barrel and a new wiseco piston and reconditioned head in my spares - and haven't needed them yet.
i bought a freshly jap imported 96 sr500 for the orange bike - and a tidy '81 sr500 H for the black one.

honestly - call adrian at vanem - he can put you onto someone for those bits if he can't help you directly - tell him ken newell (badcat) sent you.

These are 2 sr400s that are up for sale and the 1985 model has low compression requiring a top end rebuild and the 1983 looks really quite rusty..
im not sure if either are worth buying as i guess i don't really know what would be involved in getting either of them on the road (ie id pick one or the other) but i was really looking for one as a daily rider and wasn't sure if these were a good option if the work needed was easy enough to do..

What seems to always happen with my projects has happened again - I finish them then ride them a few times and then find a new project to spend every waking minute working on. I am still finisheing my second TT250 but have also bought a VW dune buggy which needs a complete rebuild frome chassis up. The VW engine is a lot like a motorcycle engine only simpler, well simpler than an OHC multi-cylinder engine anyway.
I got the SR out of the shed for a blast and discovered the WOF had expired and it got me to thinking that I really don't ride it enough. I planned to use it for running around for odds and ends or for getting to work but I need my work wagon at home for call outs so I can't use it for commuting.
I really enjoy building them a shit-load more than riding them and now I need to free up the cash to fund my current project so it's an easy decision.

I took her for a blast up to my mates place up Redwood Valley and had a ball through the twisty roads... maybe I'll put the reserve up a bit!

Very nice!!!!, always liked the Sr's but now Deus are doing such nice mods the prices have gone a bit crazy.
Yours looks like a good buy for someone who wants a really nice ride thats different and all finished, good luck with the sale![]()
Thanks Paulo, I wish I could keep all my bikes but if I did that I'd never be able to do any more (plus the wife would get difficult to live with!).
