    FZR future in doubt

I need someone, anyone with some knowledge/experiance to come and look at my bike, well listen actually. It's been making a ticking noise, I have no idea what it is or what to listen for. If it's something serious then I can make and informed decision on the bikes fate, but right now I'm just taking stabs in the dark. I go back to work on the 5th, so anytime between now and then would be great if you could squeeze the time in. Any help appreciated.

Well id say if you have a cam chain then that could be getting loose? or if its a belt then maybe the timing is thrown out a tad as it would be with a loose chain too...

or maybe the petrol is just really old?

im not too sure my self

maybe the valves and the cam clearance is off a bit? I duno much bout bikes really

Hi Duncan, I used to have FZR and presume you still have the EXUP valve in there, I believe it may well be that please see below taken from the thunderace uk website hope this is what it is and can explain it for you :

Subject: how to fix EXUP valve ticking

    > I am sure most you who have not defected to a full system are aware of the
obnoxious ticking sound that comes from the EXUP valve. The obvious culprit
is loose cable tension. I always keep my cables adjusted properly and this
cures most of it. I did still notice a ticking noise actually coming out of
the exhaust pipe. After digging around in the EXUP valve again, I finally
figured it out. The noise caused by loose cables is the valve flopping
around on it's pivot...just too much slack. But the ticking noise that
still persists after all the slack is removed from the cables is the side to
side freeplay in the valve that can't be removed with cable adjustments.
What you need to do is remove the entire valve assembly and look at it...you
will be able to see the excessive end play that causes the ticking. Right
behind the cable pulley you will see a spring and washer. It is this washer
that needs to be replaced with a thicker one to decrease the side to side
    end play in t!
    > he valve. I got a stainless steel washer from a local hardware store and
trial fit it and sanded it down slowly until I got the desired thickness.
You don't want to remove all the freeplay, just minimize it while allowing
    for expansion from heat.
    >
    > I did this a couple of months ago and still no ticking.

Usual suspects, camchain, camchain tensioner, valve clearances. If it`s no more than a "ticking" then not the end of the world, much louder and you could have a serious problem mate. Not unknown for out of synch carbs to cause such a thing.Easy to get paranoid about these things if you`re fairly new to bikes,as long as it`s just a "tick" and not a "knock" then as long as you took it easy you`d be able to get it to a mechanic with no ill effects. All bike engines make little noises, until they`re all electric powered they always will.Ask your Dad or any neighbours that are handy with cars,a motor`s a motor and someone who knows their way around a car engine should still be able to detect rattly valve-gear or whatever on a bike,or at least be able to tell you whether it`s terminal or just a niggle.

The ol screw driver blade on the engine trick should give you an idea where the noise is coming from.

I wouldnt of thought it would have for the age, but if it does, more than likely that is the noise it is a very simple item to adjust, however a small amount of noise is possibly always going to be present at idle, it does no harm so I would not worry about it. But I would verify that it is the noise.

    What got up Frankie's bottom??
My POS does not have Exup and actually has quite a different exhaust setup to yours for some reason. I do know that (after an engine rebuild) the cam chain tensioner got a bit of a hiding amongst other things like fork yolks, radiator, and airbox in a bin long before I bought it. Unfortunately accessing the cam chain tensioner is no mean feat. I do however think it will not be a fuel problem!

Just take the engine apart and put it back together . Hahahah my vt250 started ticking ......then the crank shaft bent. Replaced the engine and when i opened the old one i say how it bent. There was a large piece missing out of the piston head hahahahahaha funny stuff .
Lump lingered last in line for brains,
And the ones she got were sort of rotten and insane...

in general the FZR's arent too bad bikes, the 250's i heard were more reliable than the CBR250s. I reckon if you look at the cam chain you find a link is suspect. Is the exhaust rattling? that would be the exup valve
