What's the best 125 scooter?

Hi All,

At the moment the missus does about $100 in gas per week doing short hops all around the upper North Shore Bays.

We test rode a Yamaha Jog 50cc 2 stroke, but found it wanting in speed once she hit a hill (and when I was testing it the big hill linking where I live to East Coast road was like hitting a wall - 50km to 15 km in about the first 3 meters of incline - but I am a big bastard)

So I thought a 125 Scoot will be a better idea.

Have about 3k to spend.

So far she:

knows about the AN125 Suzuki - but have not seen or tested.
Has discounted the Yamaha Bee Wee because it looks (and I quote my wife) "A boy racers racing bike"
Likes the Piaggio 125 but know nothing about them not have tested. Question about them tho' - Can you get parts and are they like the other chineese scoots - they do look a higher quality.

Any help will be appreciated.

Big Dog's one has enough steam to get him around. I think his is a P-GO something-or-other.

piaggio are imported by triumph nz. who also import vespa. niether parts or quality should be a problem

Not exatly got the lowest seats though...how tall is the rider?

Suzuki's UZ125 would be the ticket if you can find one. Basement bargain price under $3K and a fantastic performer.

The Fly is a 125 from Piaggio but shop round for the best price. Same with TGB.

Otherwise the AN125 from Suzuki could be a goer, espicially with a dealers warranty (I think it is something like 24mths with unlimited km's...)

I would discount that purely due to the name.

Yes, as already mentioned the UZ125 suzuki is bloody awesome... especially for the money. I own one personally and absolutely adore the little guy.

Piaggio fly 125 is a good bike. quite a bit slower than the suzuki but feels nice and solid to ride... feels... bigger or perhaps more solid than the suzy. I would hit the suzuki personally it feels better to thrash but I suspect the Fly would be the choice for the ladys... it looks nicer I think and feels sturdy, less rattly than the suzuki.

As for parts the fly is chinese assembled but very much Italian regarding quality etc. the motor is a genuine piaggio unit and all the aftermarket goodies bolt straight up. Parts and reliability should be no problem at all. same with the suzuki.

The gilera runner 180 is a good fast bike but they are old and tired now... getting parts is a pain in the arse and not cheap plus they are quite tall and not particularly convenient not being step thru etc.

my vote would be for the Suzuki if you can find one... Havn't ridden the AN version but it would appear the UZ is the one to get if you can track one down

Thanks for the info (nice site BTW).

I couldn't find the UZ at my local dealer who I like to support - so I picked her up a AN unit.

Colemans by the way... no reason not to give a plug they have been bloody helpful... especially as suzuki NZ has been... well... a bit less helpful haha

The best 125cc scooter is the italjet Formula 125 inline twin 2T
and has the same set up as the Dragster in the front end so very nible and goes like stink
