can anyone fill me in on the pros and cons about importing a motorcycle to new zealand? me and the family are planning to emgrate at the end of the year and i am not shure wether to sell my bike hier and buy one down there or take her with me.... hope its as good as it looks down there.!thanks richard.

There are threads on here that deal with bringing a bike in.

Sites like Trademe and NZ dealer pages have bikes for sale. That will give you an idea of our market. Bear in mind you can pick up an 08 Busa for $20k if you haggle for cash. Your version would be be around the $10k mark or less. Bear in mind that we don't have salt on our roads and the mild climate means things last longer here. Some bikes (like BMWs/ST1300s) can look like new after 100 000 miles.

When I had finished my OE in Britain I sold my bike and brought the money over. The only problem I can think of is if the family makes plans to spend your bike money for you.

Oh and it is as good as it looks down here. Nearly a bikers paradise. We don't know how lucky we are...

www.trademe.co.nz is a website that will give you the local prices (even the stealerships use it for second hand bike prices...) to compare with.

You won't have any trouble with your bike complying here in NZ, Suzuki NZ quite often bring in new Pommy/Euro spec bikes to sell here.

I was going to bring my FZX back to NZ but saw the prices back here and with the exchange rate I sold my bike brought a ZXR and had money to go out for dinner.
I was on the Euro which at the time was just over $2.00 for 1 euro.
The last time I saw the Pound it was over $3.00 to the pound.

thanks guys.we have just put our house up for sale and the wife(mental nuirse)has been offerd work in the auckland area"must be where all the nutters are" i like the look of northland but to be honest it all looks like paradise.have you many dutch folk down there? i lived in holland from 81 to 2005 and i still miss thoes whacky cloggies. cheers

Hey Bozbusa, I emmigrated from the UK to NZ with a bike about 18 months ago. Very easy to bring a bike in and worth a lot more here than in the UK. You will need to sign a DOU saying you will not sell it for 2 years.

Becareful where you settle. Renting for six month or so is a good idea so you can find your feet.

I brought my 2003 bua from Australia and it was sweet as long as you can prove you own it.
Bikes are a bit more in price than Aussie.
And yes the roads are that good

it looks like shes going in the container . i like the xs1100 !. i had 2 of them a 1979 one and a 1980 xs eleven which i bought when i lived in the netherlands. the xs eleven was mint it came from california so no rust. i put a marvin 4 into 1 on and it sounded lovely but the colector box kept on grouding to easely..apart from that i loved them to bits.cheers
