Turns out that the 800lb shorter fixed platform with the hinged (but supportable ramp) works as well as the longer 1000lb one. If you want clearance to drop the whole front end off, you back her up, jack her up, clamp the rear wheel, remove the hinged ramp then a couple of bolts from the triple tree and Hey Presto!.. the front end falls off and breaks yer toe But!.. she's all in one peice rather than a dozen, so you can pop it back in nice and easy after yer've replaced Psyguy's steering bearings.
or front end in and wheel raised off the hinged ramp section means no load on it, or chuck a jack under the hinged ramp section and she's all solid and can be loaded ok.

[edit] just looked again and see a way to install a couple of sliding rails to support the hinged ramp back to the main rails

The important thing to remember is, not to use the side stand to hold the bike upright on the platform unless you are a very heavy sleeper
