i have always liked "odd" bikes....but those guzzi's seem to be a lot of work....i am looking for another bigger bike but have decided to stick to the twins.....so my next bike is a big 900 - 1200 twin....which is not easy to find back in the 80's....XV1000 like caseye's are around....but not too many decent ones...
Don't get me wrong, Guzzis are pretty much up there with BMW when it comes to churning out big kms. The small valve engines go and go and go (850-T3, 1000SP, Californicator, etc) but bikes like the Mk1 & 2 Lemons were pretty highly strung. For a start they came out with velocity stacks as standard, no air cleaners!
Here is a quote from the Mk1 LeMans Factory Owner's Handbook. Page one, paragraph one:
"Due to its exceptionally high feature, this motorcycle can be considered as in the racing machine class and as such has to be ridden in a sportsmanlike way.
For this reason it has met the favour of many motorcycle fans but, same as for all racing bikes, it has to be used accordingly.
For instance, if the twist grip is not used correctly in accordance with the engine revolutions, there might be an excess of fuel which is ejected by the carburettors.
It is obvious that if in such conditions the engine backfires, the risk of a fire is quite considerable"
Let me translate that Italian-into-English:
If you don't ride it like a man and stop being a pussy, it will vomit fuel all over you and set you on fire
Of course, that is why we love the Mk1 so much![]()
They just can't make a bike like that now.
Some would say good job.
Blast From The Past Axis of Oil
Dont know if any one is looking for 630 chain but this doesnt seem like a bad price estimate around $180-00 NZ ,,, http://motors.shop.ebay.com/re5sam/m...fcid=149&gbr=1
Boys can't ride broken toys.
shit dodgy...my yam leaks fuel all the time...mind you it only holds 11ltrs so not really an issue....fantastic thing to put in the manual though....wouldn't get that today...we are far to PC to be real about anything.......
Thanks for the calendar list.
Hey Status Q,
How is the bike going.. sorted yet?
Political correctness: a doctrine which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd from the clean end.
I was inspired by what Moto Guzzi said in their literature....so I found the Ducati one....

DUCATI MECCANICA Spa.
Reliaibility.....obviously relative to their other products.
I do however agree with the Magnificent Performances, usually me on trying to start it.
Did the Lemans ever win at Lemans?
The Darmah cleaned up at Darmah ( just north of New Delhi) , Enfield came second, third, forth, fifth, sixth .........innocent:
Thats bloody funny, they were so confident as long as you pray religiously it may not handgrenade.
As for Lemans at Lemans, yes but European Champs not Grand Prix. Guzzi stopped racing soon after WW2 (with a wee dabble in the early 70's) so the only people racing them were privateers.
With the factory race kit![]()

OK, this'll send you to sleep then . . . . .
"Dear BMW Enthusiast,
The motorcycle is a constant challenge to a man; a challenge to experience the adventure of man's command over the machine - direct and unadulterated. Wind, weather and road conditions must be tackled and mastered anew - on every single occasion. And above all, the machine . . . .
You have chosen a BMW with its wonderfully refined, powerful twin cylinder horizontally opposed engine and shaft drive - "the greatest", as our American friends might say. We congratulate you on this decision.
Our Owner's Manual contains all the information you need to enjoy the unspoiled pleasure of riding this fine motorcycle, and also the care and attention needed to maintain the value of this precision machine. Please study the contents - in a very short time you will become familiar with the features of your BMW.
Now you can start to enjoy a quite exceptional experience: true riding pleasure - in dense traffic, on narrow winding mountain roads, and along the endless concrete ribbon of the cross-country highway.
Sincerely yours.
BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG"
