As I sat at home with the kids today, looking out at the sunshine, thinking of Kaiaua, I couldn't help but think how good the day was for a ride with like minded bikers! And I was right. Glad everyone had a great time, bit jealous. cmoore: at least you nearly made the start line! Perhaps we'll both make it next time.

    GS1000 Jetting

I believe that the GS850 CV airbox will have rubber boots around 48 mm on their BS32 carbs. I'm not sure how much work would be involved in mating up the box mounts to your 1000, but probably far less than the time to tune in the pods/4-1 combo.

If you go down the pods track, you'll be forever trying to get rid of stumbles either just off the pilots or during the needle operation. If you must go pods, do as Psyguy suggested, buy a DJ kit and give yourself a chance of getting the jetting close. Those kits have the right shaped needles needed to correct leanness caused by the freer flowing pods.

Let me know if I can help you with ball park jet sizes.
Thanks everyone for the recommendations. Sorry for not responding sooner but i have been unable to dial in for 3 days as am on a remote dial up and cant get Vodafone reception at home. I have managed to cobble a reasonably good fitting airbox from 3 different GS ones i have collected and have a K&N airbox filter so will go down that road. Yes a set of new K & N pods was going to cost in excess of NZ$140 each so i quickly ended my interest in them. I will contact cycleworks re the 4-1. Current main jets are #112.5 not sure what the mid range jets are but as Psy said should be able to fiddle the fuel screws, side air screws and needle height to get it right, however i will probably get a shop/dyno tune. I also have a set of what i believe are GS1000S cams that came with the head and i am considering installing (0.5mm extra lobe height). I havent been able to find exact set up recommnedations for these carbs as they dont appear in any manuals for this model. I.E. early GS but has later head with larger inlet ports, these VM30? slide carbs and S cams. To date i havent run it with the S cams. These carbs to look at are like std 26/28mm VM's but taller with larger spigots and a Mikuni smoothbore type brass float and larger bowl assembly. The std VM28 carb bowl gaskets are not wide enough so have made my own. Originally the bike had the std VM26 set up perhaps i should have left it but the spare head i bought had much better carbs and inlet manifolds plus more go potential.

hey quo, whoever quoted you must have been drunk

you can get a set of four k&n pods at z1enterprises for US$150. postage by usps first class mail US$20 or so.

running the carbs that you can't find specs for is likely to be a major problem when it comes to tuning so i'd look up the gsr forum and see what options have been tried and tested. slightly different cams should not require major change at the carbs.
main jet on the 850 (and i think the 1100 as well) is 115 (mind you that is on the cv carbs).

If you're going to run the VM30 carbs your main jet will be around 120 with a stock airbox. If you fit the S cams with these carbs you'll gain more top end at the expense of the lower mid range. VM29 Smoothbore needles are usually 5DL31, probably a good starting point for your setup.
Cycleworks slash pipe should work well with your set up.

True, it only changes duration of fuel input, not fuel flow rate.

Anyone out there with a spare front wheel guard for a GS1000?

BFTP (and GSR) member 'Bill Alexander' requires one to help complete his 1000 rebuild.
