Anyone know anything bout CRT TVs?

Yeah I know... They dont have 2 wheels and go broom broom...

I just bought a 34" Philips Matchline TV off Trademe. When I tested it before collecting the picture was a little fuzzy but seller said it worked fine on sky and was just the aerial... Well it aint. Its the TV.

Any tv repair men amongst us?????

What I do know and which doesn't help at this late stage is that philips crt tv's have particularly bad reliability.

Take it back. Clearly not as advertised.

I know enough to know that in this day and age you shouldn't be buying one.

Take it back to him and tell him you want your money back... even in private sales, it's still illegal to misrepresent the goods, and you're able to take them to the disputes tribunal over it.

I wouldn't think much of your chances of getting any joy with consumer legislation ... misrepresentation is part of the the Consumer Guarantees Act but that doesn't apply to private sales. But, as it's a chick you could threaten it. Is she blonde? (*ducks for cover).

You'll probably find that the tube isn't even Philips .... most of them were Samsungs back in the day. Samsung were the world's largest CRT manufacturer.

Disclaimer - the following is not advice for those who aren't qualified... Darwin Award candidates please do not read!

I sold and serviced CRT TV's 1986 - 98 - not long after they stopped pumping them out of Waihi. Ahhh the good old days of Philips and Pye. Heavy bloody things. We used to rent them out, and spent many a day getting 26" from shelves in public bars, they were caked with smoke and dust and used to be in Teletext 24/7, you didn't need the screen to be on to read the text, it was permanently etched on the screen. I also remember the Matchlines ... so much plastic but god they were the bees knees!

If you take the back off you will find levers around the neck (back pointy bit) of the tube. They handle the focus and convergance (makes the red, green and blue colours line up). These may be adjusted to sharpen the image and get rid of any rogue colours. Now, you are likely to kill yourself if you touch the copper coloured wires circling the neck whilst the tele is on so best not to go there aye.

There are also plastic screw adjusters on the circuit board that will sharpen things up. There is usually something written near the screws to say what they do. Turning these can help.

I reckon the best thing is to get Tisco to take a look at it and give it a tune up. Probably cost less than $100 and away you go.

Consumer Gaurantees Act may not apply, but the sale was a contract based on the information provided.

Small claims court might work but you'd need to convince the judge that the dialogue took place.

    Fingers out !!

A pound to a pinch of shit you'll make it worse (or kill it) if you get inside it, the purity tabs are hard to move and unlikely to have shifted. Are you using it off air, using a known good aerial? (bunny ears are shite) can you play a DVD into the A/V in, if so is that ok. If it's ok from an A/V source then it could be the tuner or the aerial socket, assuming the aerial's all good. Is the sound good, signal problem (including a stuffed or low gain tuner) gives lots of noise on the picture ie snowy looking.

Oh yes. Got a bike, GN 250, not rode it yet, waiting for it to stop raining, scared of falling off, or getting wet and shrinking.

Knew a bloke once who had the misfortune to ever so momentarily glance his hand past the wrong bit of the innards of a telly. Luckily but predictably kicked him flat on his arse and got him a trip to the local hostipal in the ambo. He survived, but it turned the hair in the front of his head snow white and caused him a few other issues that affected him (adversely) for the rest of his days.

Sure you wanna go mess around in there? He's not joking y'know, this electricity stuff can kill you.
    Redefining slow since 2006...
