Shopping List!

Well well well...

It's shopping time. The bike's almost on it's way "home"

I've been to practically every motorbike store in West Auckland and around the city, including those over the shore. They all look like they sell the same stuff, and I have NO idea what I'm looking for, all I know about is my price range.

Here's the shopping list:

Boots: $150-$200
Gloves: $80
Pants: $250
Helmet: $100-$250

Already have a jacket (Revit RS2 Leather jacket).

Colours and stuff doesn't matter that much. I just want to save my ass when I fall (I have a nice chubby one)

Any help will be much appreciated.

If you don't mind shopping on the intarnet then try www.ridersdiscount.com ... a flat rate of US$25 shipping to NZ. Have just ordered some stuff (heaps really) so keen to see how it goes.

Don't forget with a leather jacket you will need a waterproof overjacket as leather doesn't cut it in the rain.

both are reputable sellers of product. Although I would recommend that you go into a shop to buy the helmit ... it is essential to get the right fit for you - hard to do on-line.

Boots: go for comfort - summat that fits your foot well. At that price, they're unlikely to be 100% waterproof, but if they're leather, you can treat them with SnoSeal or Bee Zwacks. More expensive boots will have features like ankle cups both sides, C/F plates, waterproofing, etc, but due to your budget, you'll have to compromise. Don't worry about race features like sliders.
Gloves: You should be able to find something that's OK for that price. You get what you pay for though. Once again, comfort's important - test them on a bike. You may find something waterproof, which is a bonus, but once again, you can waterproof gloves with SnoSeal (for leather) or silicon spray if they're leather and textile. If you can afford it, try to get something with padding and protection in the right places, or at least double-thickness leather in prone areas (heel/sides of hand, knuckles, etc.)
Pants: Look for summat that either has knee and hip armour or provision for it. If they have provision to zip to the jacket, that's good. If not, someone like Kerrie at MSW can do that for you later on (and can add armour too, if there's room). If there is armour, make sure it's well located over the bits it's supposed to protect, and can't move away in a crash.
Helmet: Must be a good fit, and have appropriate safety rating (DOT, SNell, CE, etc.)

With all this stuff, you can always upgrade later on. Even good gear will last only 3-4 years if you're using it every day. If it's really good, and comfy, the proof will be that you don't notice it when you're riding, so that means it fits well, and doesn't have irritating habits like riding up, bunching, being tight or uncomfortable in spots, etc.

Basically, you get what you pay for, so if you can stretch your money a bit for some good quality items like the helmet, and just upgrade the cheaper items later on, it's a good idea.

You might find if you ask, that a shop may give you a discount if you buy everything together. Some places (like Motohaus) have been known to allow you to pay stuff off, rather than have you being unable to afford the gear and therefore be unsafe on your bike.

You generally don't regret buying decent quality stuff, but do regret buying cheap crap to save some money. I bought some boots that were a half size too small, and while they did stretch (being leather), walking in them was literally a pain, and it took a while for them to be OK on the bike. OTOH, my current boots were $450 retail, but have been comfortable from the very first.
I bought some cheap waterproof Orina gloves, and soon hated them. They also came apart at the seams. $79 wasted.
I got a very nice secondhand race helmet in as-new condition for $150, but it was actually not a good fit for my head shape, and gave me headaches.
I have some 100% waterproof Motoline overpants, and apart from being a little slippery on the bike seat, they've been worth every cent of the $49 they cost. So gear can be good AND cheap.

There are ... multiply the price by about 1.3333 gets it close, and of course add about $30 for freight. The flat rate is darned attractive as freight is usually the killer. Bought a dark-tint and mirror visor for my helmet as the prices were soo low.

motomail always have some very cheap and good stuff in their store.

I've got some tyres, buell flyscreen and 2 chainsaw bars an 4xchains coming from the states at the mo, exchange rate worked out around@1.38. Still quite abit cheaper than getting it here.(specially the chainsaw parts 1/4 the price from here)
Your right about freight being the killer,luckly i can get cheapish freight thru the ol mans business.
Just gotta wait 6-8weeks for it tho.

I have a brand new pair of Gloves you can HAVE...
Wore them for about 1/2 an hour but they are your for free if they fit ya. Size XL... they are a small XL a bit tight for me.
You must collect cos I dont deliver free stuff.....

Let your dog chew them, dogs love motorcycle gloves. AS I FOUND OUT WITH TWO PAIRS OF MOTOCROSS GLOVES

It aint a problem getting them to ya....I know quite a few bikers form out that way....and heres something ironic, some of them I will see on Saturday, but if ya dont want them just say the word and I will shut up.....
