I've never had any abuse from a cager while splitting except for the unfortunate instance when I pulled up to a red light and managed to hit the mirror or the car in front... that was extremely awkward. But even then they didn't give me any abuse, just odd looks.
Clearly, you're doing something wrong. Nobody else has a clue in the world what you're doing wrong, and apparently neither do you.

My recommendation, as much or as little as it means,
Attend say, 2 NASS nights. On both nights request low speed handling skills (essential when lane splitting and everyone loves doing it). Propose a slow race on the first night to see how you do against others, and then again on the second night to see how you've improved. Practice in between nights.
That would be the best way to quickly boost your lane splitting ability in my opinion.
One thing you'll quickly learn about your bike in particular... those hyo's are a bitch to steer at low speeds. God knows why.
