    Suggestions for fat bastard (St_Gabriel)

    Gday folks
First time posting in the forum and have been lurking for a week or so. Have never ridden a bike or had family members who have owned bikes so am a complete novice. However, for some unknown reason I have decided (yet to convince the missus though) that I would like to try getting a bike/licence to ride.
OK firstly a little knowledge about me.
I am 34 (was gunna say middle aged but didnt want to offend anyone who was older and considered themselves as young :P )
I am, as the topic noted, a fat bastard of over 110 kgs but of average height.

What I am wanting suggestions for are what sort of bikes should I be looking for to suit myself. I am looking for a more commuter/cruising style bike rather than a speed machine, but still be capable of 110km/hr as I commute from Cambridge to Hamilton daily.

I would think that I will need to go to the higher limit of engine capacity for hauling my ass around so have been looking around at gn250's but dont know what else is available or suitable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers
    Gabe

Maybe as you have never ridden a 250 Trail bike may be a good option first up,time spent out in a paddock or similar learning to ride is all good stuff for a beginer, the bonus is that there pretty hardy and if you have the odd whoopsie it doesnt cost to much, hook up with someone who has been riding awhile and see if they will spend some time with you.Good luck and welcome.

sure is, now that's three sportbike riders - recommending a trail bike as your first bike.

    If you want to get started on sportbike riding, then you need one of these ;

They are sprung reasonably well for us fatties. Welcome to road biking. You're going to like this.

For a man your size needing a 250 you could look at any of these:

    Suzuki GSX250 twin.

    Suzuki GSF250 4-cylinder (Bandit)

    Hyosung GT250R twin

All are full size bikes easily fitting you and are easy to ride.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

And if you weigh 40KG it'll be like riding a bouncy castle... that's really bouncy...

In other words, you'll get a sore ass from the hard suspension - so I've been told. Now that I have a learner's license I really should take one for a spin.

Might add, not interested in a road registerable trail bike but thanks for the suggestion anyhow. Also have no handy paddocks/friendly farmers known to me.

I will have to go to a riding school for the initial lesson then maybe illegally practice (quiet cul de sac and friendly neighbours) before I attempt the BHS test

Thanks for the tip DB but looking for more of a cruiser. "EDIT" Or are the suggestions for sports orientated bikes more in general as they have much better performance for hefting larger weights?

In that case I'd say go for a GN250, SR250 etc as they should do that commute ok have low seat height which will help with confidence as you'll be able to plant both feet firmly on the ground. The other good thing is they have a really good second hand market so will be easy to move on once you've decided (and you will..) to get something bigger/better/faster/stronger etc

Yep I've heard good things about the Hyosungs - guy at work has one of the cruisers. The only possible negative would be at the resale end, I'd imagine they wouldn't command as good a resale price as the Jap bikes, though that could change the more there are out there getting good rep.
