If anyone was wondering why Newmarket was full of smoke this morning here is the reason. The victim is a 2000ish VW Passat.

mmmm hot wheels........
Looking at where the fire started we think that it was probably oil leaking from the turbo onto the hot turbo manifold. This may be because the car was very cold this morning and the oil feed hose may have cracked being warmed suddenly by the turbo heating up. All of this is only speculation though. The car drove fine from south Auckland to Newmarket before this happened, backing into a car park. One of the photos shows a shiny puddle under the car while it is on fire, we are pretty sure this is oil, confirmed by the drain under the car which is now a rainbow.
Best reply wins a chuck of charred VW
Is there anyway to post a video on here? or only link to youtube? the video is the car on fire and then it being put out by the fire brigade.

I wonder if that car had a aftermarket stereo in it? Looking at the wheels and that it's been lowered i'd say more than likely.....hmm...
he has a point, if the electrics have shorted they can cause the fire which could cause oil to leak.
Just a maybe.
So fill us in.. What happened?
My comment was only speculation obviously given that there was only photo's and no information.
Seems rather odd a car would just ignite like that and i'd think you'd find most of the spontanious car fires like this could put down to someone who does'nt know what they are doing having a fiddle.
Living a lie!!!!!!
My first thought is a battery short (and I can't see one in the picture...) but any updates are welcome...

the car was backing into the car park when smoke started pouring out, the guy has only had it worked on by pro's and has not had any work done for months so not due to recent poor work, oh...the stereo still works!! The fire inspector agrees the fire probably started near the turbo I'll post the vid on you tube and put up a link
