Welding Aluminium Alloy Mirror Clamp

On a 250 Spada, my friend binned and broke off a mirror. The mounting appears to be made of aluminium alloy. Can this be welded? Getting parts for the Spanish made Spada are difficult - a small part of the frame was cracked and it took 2 months to get the part which went from Spain to Japan to Auckland to Masterton.

I assume the mirror screws into a boss on one of the lever mounts, like in this picture?

If so, then it is weldable, but it is a pretty soft alloy, and won't be as strong.
You could also look at other Honda models for a similar part, perhaps on the VTR250?

Or you could fit a bar end mirror, like this.

better to buy an aftermarket mirror, The alloy they use for those things is increadbly weak. and welding reduces the strenght in the surrounding area of the metal (the weld itself sometimes is stronger)

But it can be done, uesally by TIG or AC MIG.

Its not just the mirror that is broken but the part that is attached to the clutch lever. So it means that the entire lever/mirror assembly would have to be replaced.

bistard - I went to see the guys at Southern engineering & marine (not far from where I live) and they said no problem welding it. My mate will go there next week.

vagrant - Yep thats a Spada but its hard to see the mirror mounting in that pic. If the welding does not work I'll refer my mate to your info. Thanks.

just dont drop it again!

Then theres the other way of fixing it. go to a wrecker and get the back part of the clutch perch from a bike that has the mirror mount on the back not the front

An 18 year old bike with 8,000 km, for $4500. Yeah, right....

It does look good though. Maybe it sat in a Jap garage for 99.9% of those 18 years...

Sounds like a good idea although I must admit I don't know what you are talking about!
