    Question VFR400 Odd tacho problem

    Hi,

I have a '93 VFR400R and I'm very pleased with it. Everything has been going well untill I noticed that the tacho was reading higher than before?!?!?

At 100kph, the tacho used to read about 7k ..... now it reads at about 11k. It's consistent through the revs reading high all of the time. Yes all the gears are still in the box and the bike is running well without the clutch slipping. I'm stumped as to why and how.

If anyone can help then I'd be greatful. Is there a test that a mechanical muppet like me can do?

Oh if these bikes are supposed to be rev limited at the red-line then with this problem it's not effecting it. 14,500 revs (re-line) and beyond is fine and nothing feels like it's over-reving or any different from before I noticed this.

when it's idling does the tacho sit at the correct rpm or is it at like 7000rpm?

I have just run into this problem- except my rpm guage is now at least 3000rpm higher at all revs and gets worse when revved. Normal riding it is off of the clock... It happened as i started it one time.

Any further ideas as to how to fix? Possibly binded cable or something i have no idea....

These tachos are electric (not mechanical cable) driven. Right? hXc's Spada used to do this same reading high thing sometimes. Was probably a bad earth somewhere.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
