Just rung Orcon via their rural Bb thingy.

They did a check via satellite or whatever they do, said we can't get wireless and the only option is satellite @ about $2500 just to set up, plus the monthly bill.
Googling also shows similar satellite prices from other firms too.

I'm only 15 mins from Hastings on the main race track for bikers, you'd think...how fuckin hard is it to get broadband!
Every bastard I've rung in the last day or so has said we can't get it, tests dont work and satellite is the only option at about 2500k.

Gonna ring the outfit that installed the neighbour's dish who are in a straight line about 400 metres away on another hill and see if they can hook or get a feed off them or something, fucked if I know.

Would be good to watch youtube stuff at home without a 3 day wait for a 1 minute clip.

You post prompted me to ring the outfit we ahd out to see if we can explore other options, so the chick looked up their records and it said the signal is completely blocked by trees, so they're gonna send some techo out to see if there is anywhere else we can get a signal.
She said it will cost...........I said, life costs, what's new.......

Wot Cajun said, chainsaw will solve the problem!

I live rural here too and our phone line is a radio phone, connected to a tower about 1km from farm. Apparently not suitable for data transfer.

The gubmint here in Oz helps pay for a sattelite connection.... waiting for the jokers to arrive and set up now!

    Good luck!

    The trees are'nt mine.
They are just over the fenceline on a farmer's land and about 50 acres of pines.
Might be a bit of a mission sneaking and cutting them.

there are plenty of other ways. You have had a couple of good offers from technical people.

If you have LOS to your neighbours place, and can come to an arrangement with them you should be able to setup wireless between your place and his and share the satellite for less than 2500.

Tbh I really don't understand what some have said, some of the techo stuff.
More of a case of never being into it.
Just turn pooter on and use.

Oh, and I do appreciate what you've all said, taking it in, but some over my head.
Hey I'm a mechanic, not a pooter guy.

It's no where near the speed you'd get in town but it's so much faster than dial-up it's not even funny!

If your neighbors are approachable to the idea I 'could' just be matter of sharing their data usage... perhaps. & you pay the setup costs on the link from his house to yours
