It's no where near the speed you'd get in town but it's so much faster than dial-up it's not even funny!
Yeah the B/B leavs a lot to be desired here but least i can open pages with a single bound !
All i need now is another gig of processor and i might not put the fist through another monitor lol (no not that stupid, i throw it)
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

They did a check via satellite or whatever they do, said we can't get wireless and the only option is satellite @ about $2500 just to set up, plus the monthly bill.
Googling also shows similar satellite prices from other firms too.
See if your local farm supply store has worked out a deal for its customers. I have just started working for a guy who can not get broadband as he lives rurally. I dont know if he paid to get set up, but he pays $100 a month to a local farm supply store for his satellite broadband. Have to say though it was a bit slow compared to what we get here in town, but better than dial up by a long way.

ok brace yourself, heres the technical description.

We put a repeater on a nearby hilltop where everyone can see it, and then link from the repeater into town to someones wired broadband. Each house has a little antenna pointing at the repeater. All the houses share the initial install cost of the repeater.

See! No rocket science. Initial costs are about 4-5k for the repeater, and about 4 hundy per house ish, plus a negotiable golden handshake for the prick who installs it for ya (digging all the post holes for the antennas is a good negotiating tool.) Ongoing costs are just the broadband connection in town. Then there is the question of who knows how to maintain it - its pretty basic gear. A team of 4 blokes can install the repeater and 3-4 houses in a day. ish.

All plus/minus heaps, etc, ad nauseum. YMMV. Wonders never cease etc, now where did that crescent spanner go ?

    Just an update.

Just been pondering on all this, Farmside are meant to be coming back to see if they can find a spot to mount something somewhere to make it work, but not heard....

Anyway, since I'm going into hospital shortly for a week and then a fairly lengthy lay up I thought I'd get a laptop to take to hospital and when I'm parked here as I wont be able to sit at the pooter desk.

Enquired about the mobile broadband thingy that Telecom are promoting now for a laptop.
No probs the sheila said, plug the stick thingy in the lap top and away you go as long as you have 027 mobile covergae in the area.
    Yep, we do.
You can take it out and put it in your home pooter too and you have BB on that too........

Ehhhhh? Just put the stick in the PC and its that simple.
    Yep she said.
I just have, it is......just like that, broadband.

    Well fuck me..........solved.

    Been fucking about for months.......

Does'nt quite seem as fast as town, but I aint complaining!

Depends on the terrain around you. If there isn't someone in your area offering wireless internet, then you can install your own equipment easily enough. Its not particularly cheap, but a quite a few households can share a single broadband connection.

Yep, its a USB sticky thingy.

I think she said it was $59.95 a month for 1 gig and an extra $10 if you use 2.

But I dont play games, download music or anything like that, its just net and email things I do.

End of the day I'm rapt, dont really care what it costs tbh.

You might be able to get a faster datacard - the old ones are worse than dialup as you have seen. You are quite close to town - just call telescum and tell them you want ADSL please and make it quick kthx. Quite likely you will get ADSL if you are closeish to town.

Failing all that, if you can see another house that does have ADSL, then you can link to it with a pair of antennas and radios and share their ADSL.
