    Too Industrial....

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/...ectid=10522744

My old school changed it's name today - the old name of Penrose High School ''no longer reflected the values, traditions and aspirations of the wider school community".When I went to the school it's tradition and aspiration was too send it's pupils out into the biggest industrial centre of New Zealand....and most of us did.It provided the fodder of industry.

I only went to 2 schools, and now both have changed their names - the name change of my primary school was obvious and should have been done decades before. It was a long way from Mt Wellington, and directly across the road from Sylvia Park.Maybe Sylvia Park wasn't anything to be proud about in the '50's.

I can sympathise with you Motu, it is sad when the PC brigade get hold of stuff.

If its in Penrose, Penrose High didn't sound like a bad name did it.

There are the classics of a wider nature how Lower Hutt thinks its name should be Hutt City, and around our way the PC brigade tried to suggest changing Porirua's name to something else.

If there is a problem with a school or a city because of image, you've got to change the reality to improve the image, a name change wont do that and the new name will get a bad name anyway.
    Cheers

All the UK's polytechnics changed to universities back in the early 90s. 'Cos you couldn't have two Oxford Universities in the same town, the old polys needed to change their name to something else. So City of London Poly became London Guildhall University, Oxford Poly became Oxford Brookes University and so so.

You have to wonder about the trustees of Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic who decided that renaming themselves to the Central University of Newcastle upon Tyne was a good idea.

The four-letter UCAS code that all tertiary education providers use to identify themselves would have been interesting. The trustees only realised what a monumental fuck-up it all was after they printed the headed paper and business cards, etc.

'Birkdale' could do with a review.

There is a Part of Perth called 'Dogswamp' and a Suburb 'Innaloo'.
I'd be on the names committe thar.

Que? Newcastle Poly is now the "University of Northumbria at Newcastle" and has been since at least 1989 when I went to the real university down the road...

    What a f...ing mouthfull.

Wasn't One Tree Hill changed to Maungakiekie for PC reasons (or was it the uncertainty of the enduring presence of the tree)?
Can't have that though......no one can spell it.

Perhaps Greenlane College?......nah, associated with low-life car dealers.

Its a tough job being a school trustee having to deal with these momentous and difficult issues.

It thought the change was in the early 90s, not 89, but whenever it was that the polys renamed themselves to Unis, is when it happened. University of Northumbria at Newcastle might be the name they finally went with, but it wasn't the name they originally chose. Google it - there are plenty of references.

I have to agree with Sanx on this one. It changed between my first and second years' at the real university. My version of the legend was "City University of Newcastle upon Tyne" but also included the sign actually being painted before anyone realised.

The student's union also went broke, owing UKP250k, and was apparently bought by Scottish and Newcastle.

Papakura Intermediate - became Mansell Senior School.

Name change didn't stop the place being the shit hole it is...
