    The exodus continues...

Son went to Aus for a week to visit a mate and have a break. He has a pretty good job here, but while there he checked out the job sites and went to see a couple of places.

He's an experienced and qualified welder, and went into a local manufacturer and saw the boss. That was last Monday.

The boss checked his CV and said, "When can you start?" Mike asked, "Um. What's the pay?" Boss says, "What do you want?"

Mike - "Well, most of the jobs I've looked at are paying between $20 - $25ph."

Boss - "Sounds okay, how about we start you on 25?"

Mike - "Don't you want to check my welding? Have a demo?"

Boss - "No, your history looks good, I'm happy."

Mike - "I'd be happier if I gave you a demo, honestly."

Boss - "Oh, okay." *Takes him into the w/shop and gets him to do a weld* "Yeah, maybe I'll start you on $27ph. And if you show a bit of initiative, I'll probably make you Forman. The guys here don't show any initiative and I'd like someone who thinks a bit. Mind you, I'd then have to pay you more... So when can you start?"

Mike - "Well, I could come in Wed. but I have to go back home and give my boss two weeks notice and then shift over."

Boss - "Fine, I'll organise your tax number and see you Wed."

So Mike rings me from his cellphone which he'd got an Aus SIM card for with $150 free time on it.

He's going to flat with his mate and his Uncle and Aunt are just up the coast a bit. We're going to miss him, but what could he do?

My little brother went over a couple of months ago. He was part way through a coach building apprenticeship.

He walked straight into a job in a steel smelter - just labouring - $47 per hour.

He is working 72 hours per week and has a 6 month contract.

Given the exchange rate - he will have a nice deposit for a house when he returns.

Yep! If I were 20-30 years younger. Even so with family and friends over there, it's tempting at times. Trouble is, we'd be leaving behind our two daughters and sons-in-law and our only grandchild. Couldn't do that... Even Aus is too far away.

After spending 3 weeks over there last month I was loathe to come back to NZ.

If the other half had of said yes you wouldnt have seen my arse for the door closing on the plane.

I have a lot of mates from school (Papakura High) living over there now and they all did their best to convince me to emigrate.

Yeah, I know heaps of people who have either left for the greener shores of Aussie or the UK or are in the process of getting their stuff together to leave or even those who are considering it... for lots of varying reasons, but mostly $$

If I was single I'd be there in a flash. No chance now as the mother n law wouldn't get to see her grandchild much.

Shouldn't that be "the grass is always crispy brown - if there is any grass, except for 3 months in the middle of the year"

Mebbee not - doesn't have the same pithy ring to it....
