    Apple iPhone

Apple have announced their much anticipated iPhone. Here are the specs from MacRumors site:

    Hardware Features
    - 3.5" Widescreen touch-sensitive display
    - 11.6 mm thin
    - 2 megapixel camera
    - proximity sensor, accelerometer, and ambient light sensors
    - Quad-band GSM/EDGE + WiFI + Bluetooth 2.0
    - Battery Life: 16 hours audio, 5 hour talk/video/browse time

    Software Features
    - Runs version of OSX. "Full desktop-class applications"
    - conference call support with up to 3 participants
    - multiple SMS session support (iChat-like interface)
    - Safari: first fully useable HTML browser on a phone
    - "coolest photo management app ever"
    - Widget support
    - Yahoo IMAP mail
    - Google Maps (with satellite image) integration

I think this looks shit hot. I haven't had too a hard a look at the specs etc but having a look at it on www.apple.com it looks real nice. Its Quad GSM which means it would work on the Vodafone network here (I think). I believe the prices are US$499 (4G) and US$599 (8G)...

Not interested in Apple-brand bashing on this thread thanks...I'm an Apple fan, but am posting this because its a damn good looking product.

yup .. been there read the news
macworld is today .. so lots of new goodies coming out (like @tv )

the iphone looks the bizzo, but no 3g network on it, so its gsm/gprs only, not packet switched .. so no video calling etc etc

Does have wifi tho' .. I'd use that a whole more than I would 3g

Doesn't say...you'd think it would be the same case design that they use for the latest large iPods though eh?

Looks too fragile as my phone normally jumps off my desk at least once a day.

Whats quite cool is that I think the LCD is the same size as the PSP (3.2" although I haven't checked yet)...and they're mint!

[edit] actually scrub that, the PSP screen is 4.3".

I liked Steve Jobs' comment in the keynote address that the killer app for the iPhone would be phone calls.

Cellphones, apart from the $100 bottom-end models like my Nokia 2125, have become impossible to use.

If the iPhone fixes that and still works very well as a PDA and browser, it will win bigtime.

I agree that GSM + WiFi is a good solution. It's cheap for the user, and let's face it - most of us spend most of our time bathed in the happy glow of an freely available 802.11 network, whether it be at home, work or a Starbucks in Shenzhen.

The fact that it runs full-blown OS X is also a big turnon.

If those USD prices were in NZD, I'd be very tempted to buy one.

Again, I haven't read the whole thing through (Im working apparently) but I dont think they address the PDA solution at all...its more iPod/iPhoto/Video/Phone fusion. I agree about the +$100 phone useability though.

Yep totally wicked and yes its GSM so will work with Vodafone but Voadfone dont support EDGE so i dont think you will be able to use lots of fetures unless you are conected to a wifi conection

Jobs did talk about calendar, email, browsing etc. I think that qualifies as PDA. He didn't mention office suite type apps, but presumably if the device runs OS X it'll just be a matter of time before the relevant ports are done.
