Rosebank Speedway Jan 16.
As is often the case - we have international riders in NZ for their off season break, they have been riding at tracks around the country and last weekend were at Rosebank, and again this sunday.
They had ridden at Gisborne the night before and drove up in the morning and straight on the track. In the second race of the day on a fresh track the lap record was broken - under 59 seconds, the previous record had been held for sometime. As usual with a record time it didn't look that fast, and there were dropped mouths when we heard the time...I wanted to see it again to see how it was done. The first races of the day on a wet slushy track are usualy for the lower classes,or maybe they'll get the classic midgets to pack it if they are there(they hate it,it's hard to clean the cars afterward) Fastest times of the day are later on when a blue groove has developed,so it was an impressive bit of riding alright.
They had some quads there too,one was a quadzilla type with a 4 cyl and wings, but it wasn't very fast,he was running smoothish tyres and maybe wasn't hooking up on the track. One of the quads took out the wall and had both front tyres burst when they dragged it out.A Jawa powered Thunder Chair looped on his first practice start and the rider went off in the meat waggon, didn't even get to the startline.A couple of solo's looped too,so it was a good track alright.
They are back this sunday 16,so how about you expand your motorcycling experiance, have a day in the sun and see the worlds best speedway riders show how it's done sideways without gears or brakes.Do what I do,go for a ride in the morning and relax for the afternoon.
