Just a couple of questions, as I'd love to take a look............
What sort of difficulty is the Maungatapu? Is access via top of Brook Street - where exactly?
Round trip to Pelorus and back takes how long exactly?
    Cheers.
Maungatapu is up the Maitai - Go straight up untill you hit gravel and then turn left at the cattle-stop there's a big sign at the caretakers overlooking the dam.
    About 1hr each way.

At the moment it's a bit slippery with clay/ice/snow but not difficult if you take it easy. I went through on a road bike when it was a lot rougher.

That was a good day - Thanks guys.

Only 50% of the bikes needed zip-ties to hold things on

    Rosedale Summit...

Dovedale Hill looking over to Pigeon Valley.

    View from Boundary Road/Ben Nevis.

Your KLX250 should eat the Mangatapu for breakfast...just consider your tyre pressure /or tread depth and you'll be fine. It's 42 kms from town to Pelorus, and as Nordie said, takes about an hour. Track rides better when it's had some rain, the Pelorus side gravel can be skitterish in the dry (if you're pushin it along a bit!). Get out there and enjoy!

I'd recommend doing the maungatapu the first time after a few dry days - in the wet it's a bit sippery on the rocks & clay but a grouse ride. i'd be keen to go over with you if you want company.

Zerax you were very very close to my rock crossing through that stream

The ride yesterday was great - thanks guys. I will definately get back & do wairoa gorge again. Um Nordie can you be discreet with the editing of the video

Ah sounds like it was lotsa fun. Sat I was out on the 2T in the brilliant weather so I did get some riding in - made up for spending all Sunday pruning and taking green waste to the tip

Next weekend is no good for me, cross-country race. Hopefully NO snow.
    Cheers,
    Colin

Looks like the next ride is Sat 16th up Lake Chalice/Mt Patriach.
Of course that would include the Maungatapu for those based in Nelson

I may go over to the XC and take some photos but my bike isn't suited to XC yet (too twitchy, can't wait to get my longer forks) and I prefer MX on it.

It looks to be about 170km one way including the Maungatapu and Onamalutu.
We'd probably have to leave about 9am to get back in daylight.
