I had a brake light flasher on my VFR (my son made it for a damn sight less than $148 - in fact, I think he made it from the various electronic doodads in our basement, so apart from the cost of some plugs to hook it into the wiring, it was free).
It flashed the brake lights at an ever decreasing rate, and after 10 flashes or summat, stopped flashing (brake lights on until brakes released).
I had to disconnect it temporarily for the next WOF, as brake light flashers are illegal.
The reason? Apparently, they induce target fixation in motorists following you. Or so the bureaucrats say.

It blew a component / got a dry joint / broke a wire after a few months, so I disconnected it permanently.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....
