Person trivia - another forum game

Thought I might try and get another ball rolling here.

The idea is to guess a "famous" person based on obscure clues. The more obscure and difficult the better...

    The rules:

    1. Whoever comes up with the right answer posts the next clue.
    2. All questions have a duration of 24 hours - if 24 hours passes and noone has guessed the person, whoever gets in first posts the next clue.
    3. No team-sports sportspeople - otherwise this will degenerate into a rugby/baseball/football frenzy from which it shall never recover.
    4. Motorsports are excluded from rule #3.
    5. There is no rule #5.
    6. It's all fun and games - keep it clean.

    First clue:

We can thank this scottish veterinary surgeon, who was a good friend of Queen Victoria, for smoothing out our rides.
It is preferential to refrain from the utilisation of grandiose verbiage in the circumstance that your intellectualisation can be expressed using comparatively simplistic lexicological entities. (...such as the word fuck.)

That would be John Boyd Dunlop, inventor of the pneumatic tyre.

    Edit:

What former English plasterer made an international household name for himself by being exceedingly average at his chosen winter sport?.

    Correct.

I realised after I posted the clue that I broke the rules already (sportsperson).

So you did, ah well ski jumping is a minority sport just like motor racing.

This Sir bolted a blower onto his motor to take on the might of the Germans and won.

    R J Mitchell? (Supermarine Spitfire).
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.
