A gypsy, without whose inspiration we may never have had Heavy Metal.

No, we're looking for one person. He was instrumental in a very handy way...

No, the gypsy bit wasn't cryptic...he really was a Romany and was always known by his gypsy name.

OK...the link to the Heavy Metal part of the clue is made. Now, you need to think about why Tony's sound came about...and why it might never have.

Tony lost the tips of two fingers in an industrial accident the day that he was due to end work at some Birmingham factory. He was due to go on tour with his {then) band but couldnt due to the injury. He spent a lot of time recovering and trying to play guitar again but was in a lot of pain. He made "fingertips" for himself and had to detune his guitar (to the famous "diminished fifth" devils tuning) so as to be able to play at all. Less string tension meant he could still play but in different keys.

edit: Yup, Django Rheinhart: Romany, guitar player, injured hand.

Bingo! You didn't even need the further prompting.

Tony Iommi nearly gave up playing guitar after he lost the tips of his fingers but was disuaded by his boss using Django (who lost the use of a couple of fingers in a fire) as an example...

    OK:

My father came from Muscle Shoals and now I am paying homage to the Stax sound:

    Who am I?

bonus point: what am I doing?
