Either I need another clue to narrow the field, or I'm barking up the wrong tree - Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper were both co-writers on Easy Rider

YES! Well done MisterD, Peter Fonda is the man. The clue was "fond". Seems like I'm in a hippie timelock at the moment. Incidentally Terry Southern helped write the screenplay too.
