Willie Apiata?
Only a Rat can win a Rat Race!
No. Willie got his VC for picking up and carrying a seriously wounded SAS sergeant while under direct fire from Al Queda fighters. This was a major action against an Al Queda fortress in the south-west of Afghanistan and involved most of 22nd Regiment SAS. To be fair to Al Queda - because they were routed - the SAS were supported for half an hour by American fighter/bombers so it wasn't quite an equal battle. Even so, most of the action was pepperpotting across desert against buildings full of fanatics which is not an easy task.
My father-in-law knew this man and said he had to be moved around a bit because he didn't always agree with others. He didn't take orders well being somewhat of an individualist.
Once he stood on the bonnet of a jeep to observe the enemy. When abused by his mates he calmly explained that the enemy machine-gunners were trained to fire at a certain elevation and since he was above that, they wouldn't raise their fire.
Charles Upham.
Oh bugger
Excellent Marty. He was a remarkable man. My late father-in-law was a NZ Army Major in the Western Desert and Italy and told fascinating tales of those days. There is no question that Charlie Upham was a brave man. The trouble was, he didn't suffer fools and tended to diss officers which was a bit awkward for the others.
Your turn.
He sure was, very interesting read.
This will be a series of pix related to the person I have in mind. I say series in the hope that I get past the first guess this time. Too many good googlers man.![]()

OK the cheese has the same name as the ship and is connected to these pix, which should bring you to the surname of this person, who stood 5 feet 8inches.
That should bring it home for you clever buggers.
