    Fake Alarm Light

    Hey guys,

I have a mate who's wanting to make a fake little alarm light that flashes just like an alarm light in a car (not a bad idea). We went into dick smiths, they knew bugger all there. I've tried searching... I've googled it, only came up with bloody technical circuits that I can't understand... argh.

Help! This is an excellent idea to scare those bastard theives.

No reason you can't connect to the bike battery, with a hidden isolate switch or connector.

Also falls in the "very simple to do" category. Just don't hook it up directly to 12V, or it'll only flash once.

Can run it off an AA battery, and it draws bugger all current so should last a fair while.

I made one on my old XJ... ripped out the 80km warning light and then inserted a flashing diode thingy wither a hidden switch. Add the stickers and your done..

LEDS need a 1000 ohm resistor in series with them for 12v..

Better still, hook up a small relay from the battery so that when the ignition is on, the led doesnt flash. Ignition is off, LED flashes. Would work well for lazy bastards like me

I just made one (for my old van) with some logic so that it turned on when the switched power was turned off.

Jaycar Electronics sell those fake alarm kits thingos (technical term). So your mate is reinventing the wheel.
Or fake alarm, in this case.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

I hear they've stopped production of the LM3909 timers. I might still have some floating about though. I had one rigged through a PIR as a trigger in the carport when I lived in Hamilton. It ran a little relay to start and run for 20 seconds a windscreen washer pump to spray on the car bonnet and keep the cats off. Worked a treat - they learned within 2 days not to jump on the car regardless of how warm it was.

Why not fit an actual alarm? Jaycar have one for $72 with 2 remotes, immobiliser, auto-rearm, shock sensor, panic & silent arm. I fitted one a few months back - it's brilliant.

If you decide that's not what you want and go the flashing LED, just use a 5-pin relay in parallel to the ignition or headlight feed wire from the fuse box (if off the headlight wire it'll flash and remind you your headlight isn't on if you're riding) That way if the ignition is on, the LED circuit will be isolated from the battery.

If you need a wiring diagram just say so and I'll try and whip one up.
If it wasn't for a concise set of rules, we might have to resort to common sense!

Did a similar things years ago with a relay in coil (low voltage) circuit hooked up to the oil pressure switch. Someone could start the vehicle but as soon as the oil pressure came up the car would would die. Then it would restart fine. There was a secret switch to bypass all this.

The idea was to frustrate the would be thief into thinking it was stuffed and it wasn't worth stealing!
