    Question here

    I brought my Ducati 600ss off a mate and it came with a straight pipe (had the baffle taken out), I was wondering if there would be any difference in power if i put it back to normal? Although it does sound good at the mo, especially going through Mt Vic tunnel hehehe

    Engines rely on exhaust pipes being designed to suit their tuning - depending on what sort of bodge job this was you may get more power or you may get less. Try it and see what happens. More noise doesn't necessarily mean more power - get it dynoed and you'll know the real answer.

    With the baffle put back in, it will probably make a little more power in the low to mid-range, and maybe a bit less at higher revs. This is due to the effect that back-pressure / reflected sound waves have on exhaust port scavenging etc. The nett result is that it may be a little bit more 'ridable', if a bit less musical / soul-stirring.

    You should be able to get a setup that sounds good and performs well.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Depends if the guy who modded the exhaust had it set-up properly to run like that,if all he`s done is take the baffle out it`s probably running weak.If he has done it properly and it`s not just a bodge then put it back to standard and it`ll run rich.I dont know a lot about Ducatis ,is the exhaust designed with removeable baffles or has someone tampered with it? If it`s the latter it`s not a great sign,bit of a lash-up and most would have replaced the silencers not hacked the originals around so I`d wonder about what else he`d messed around with to be honest.As merv says louder dosnt nescessarily mean faster and running a bike with no baffles can rip the guts out of the power output,if it`s running too weak there`s also a risk of overheating or even seizure,best thing to do is get it checked out a.s.a.p.

    the last bike i had before the zed was a 600ss and i got bored and removed the air filter to see if it made any diff... sounded like a sic vtec.
    but i got yelled at by my mechanic whom it took him a while to figure out why it was running lean at the top end. so i would be careful with either removing or replacing any part of the induction or exhaust systems without talking to someone in the know or by the use of a dyno.

    have a chat to the boys at motomart, when i had mine a joker called wayne or phill did my services and they were pretty sharp.
