GSXR 250 Problems!

Recently bought a 1988 GSXR 250 for my first bike and don't have too much bike knowledge at this stage but I do have reasonable mechanical understanding so to speak. Just wondering if someone could tell me the following:

- What size spark plugs would be in my GSXR?
- Do I have to remove the fuel tank to access the spark plugs?
- Where could I obtain the appropriate spark plug socket to remove the spark plugs?
- What is the most likely reason for my speedo not working and how would I fix it? (Still illuminates but needle doesn't go).

Any help would be much appreciated, cheers.

Yes you need to remove the tank from the bike to reach the spark plugs, easy job. As far as which plugs search the internet on the NGK homepage or something it will tell you what to use. Go and buy a decent socket set with a spark plug attachment, or if you can buy just the attachment from somewhere like repco.

On my old GSXR the speedo gearbox attached to the front wheel (you'll see the thickish black cable running from it to the instrument cluster, where it attaches at the bottom that black thing) died for no reason. Disconnect the cable and move the bike forwards and see if the little thing where the cable connects to turns. If no it is poked.

Spark plugs are CR8E or CR9E (or CR8/9EK for twin electrode)NGK's (I've seen different numbers listed for these bikes - FYI, the higher the number in NGK the colder the heat range so I'd use 8's if you are just riding around town with occasional open road blasts or 9's if its more high speed stuff) but double check that the plugs are the same as the one's you remove. Make sure you keep receipt from shop for the plugs just in case you have to exchange them.

From memory you'll need a long-ish extension for your spark plug socket to reach the plugs. Supercheap or Repco would be the best bet for this.
If it is the CR8/9 plug then the hex size is 16mm

Most likely culprit for the speedo not working will be 1) broken inner cable 2) jammed or broken speedo gearbox as above post
To check the cable/gearbox just unscrew the cable from the gauge and spin the wheel, if the inner cable doesn't turn then unscrew the other end and a) check the gearbox is ok as above post and if the gearbox is ok b) pull the inner cable out of the outer and you'll probably find it's in two pieces.

Other things to check are that someone hasn't had it apart and fitted it incorrectly destroying one of the ends where it engages with the gearbox or speedo.

From my memory banks it should be C7HSA or CR7HSA.

Check the current plugs; just take the tank off (use your noggin for this) pull the plugs and take a look at what they are.
Be caerful not to drop anything down the plug holes...

To be honest that's the number that I thought it was too, but everything I looked up said CR8/9E....
Maybe there are different plugs for different model GSXR250's?!
Either way I agree, it comes back to seeing what is in there now!
