My recently purchased 1983 Honda CX400 seems to have only 4 gears. I assume it is supposed to have 5. Anybody have any ideas as to what is wrong? When you are in 4th, you lift your toe but it simply stays in 4th.

You will probably need to split the casings to find out for sure. A complete second hand motor may cost less, than to repair it. Hope you didn't pay too much for it. The 500 motors fit in the gap.
When life throws you a curve ... Lean into it ...
Are you going UP from neutral and counting 4 gears?
To see a life newly created. To watch it grow and prosper. Isn't that the greatest gift a human being can be given?
I am going to check again this evening.
Well what the hell! I checked it out in the workshop this evening and it really does have 5 gears. I am not sure what happened when I test drove it but it is shifting correctly on its stand. The whole thing will require more study. Thanks for your help guys.
