Poly tech night classes are still the best way to learn.
Bulk equipment available, experienced tutors that will teach you the methods, and a nice shiny certificate at the end.
Also some poly techs offer evening hobby classes, where projects can be built up. Prison offers similar options also, but the students are wankers apparently.

Find someone who is a welder to show you. (not to be confused with someone who thinks they can weld)
That way you avoid the BS and fairy tales and will learn more in one hour than reading any book then having a go.
If a book is the last resort go for it.

Is there a Polytech in Dunedin? Chch or Invercargill might offer a short course.

The petrol and oil soaked rags have been laid out flat to allow the fumes to disperse, so as to avoid spontaneous combustion... haven't they?
