Most of that central area got quite heavily covered in dirt and ash when Mount Taupo last erupted...

I wouldn't laugh too hard - a lot of that ash is in your backyard too.

About 1 metre thick last time I checked...

Reading about the Napier quake in 31 - most died running outside or while trapped in the burning buildings.

As Coldkiwi said NEXT to a large object, not under a table, desk etc.

Yeah, had to tell that advice to my little brother who was convinced it was the end of the world.

I just went back to bed. The bloody earthquake had tipped me out!

Just felt another one. A little vertical kind of shake a bit like bouncing in a bed.
    Cheers

maybe we've been misinterpreting this, those magazines might be ammunition for his, err, gun.

A guy at work lives in Kingslea Hights in UH and he says his lat/long is 41.07S; 175.06E now the mere 5.5 this morning was at 41.09S; 175.06E supposedly 2 nautical miles south of him, which is about the Trentham Race course??

I could have been fed bulls hit of course.

Re Napier the two after shocks, which were nearly as big as the actual quack itself, did the damage.

www.geonet.org.nz has a really cool area under "Data centre" where you can get the quake information absolutely fascinating.

I just sat back and enjoyed it. I love earthquakes because it's pretty amazing thinking about what's actually going on and knowing that we're living in such an active landscape! (Geog student getting a bit excited here). What a great place to live! Then again, I totally accept that there'll be huge devastation when the 'big one' comes and that'll be terrible, but these little ones a fun.

There was a gun involved but not the sort you suggest.

I'm sorry, I shouldn't make mirth in a serious thread like this. I shall go to my room and flagellate!

    Charlie in Mad Max

No choccie fish thanks. I'm diabetic. I'll have a rep point instead.

He actually said. "You're blaspheming again... I don't have to work with a blasphemer."
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.
