    Thats pretty funny!

    I love work place antics!
I've thought about getting a tattoo, but in all honesty I probably wouldn't. I may change my mind later in life, who knows.

Well since people are asking about who is the best - what about in Wellington.

I got my last 1st one done by Ken who was in James Smith Markets and my 2nd one done by Roger in Cuba St but, he's retired now. I have heard the guy at Tattoo City is really good too...I'm feeling it's time for some more ink.

    Cheers CSL

A really good tattoo artist that can do negative space work and isn't massively painful... I'm looking to put a tattoo on my hip, and I want to go to someone with a good reputation and excellent artwork...

The design is my own, but it's a japanese character (so someone with good lettering skills would be good) and is part of a bigger design

    Any clues?
The last artist i used was Chris Bezencon at
    "Eastside Tattoo Studio"

    Very good in my books.

Uhm, I can recommend Otis Frizzel (Mo Show guy), he used to do his stuff through dermagraphics on college hill. This is assuming he's still tattooing.

I need to get mine touched up, stupid skin.

I would be very nervous getting any language (particularly a foreign one) engraved permanently on my body, particularly noting the general lack of competence of spelling and punctuation skills in the population at large and also my observation of many tattooists who cannot spell tattoo properly on the fronts of their premises or those who claim to apply tattoo's...

As a quality control measure, get some fluent Japanese speaker to translate your favourite phrase into Engrish for you BEFORE you get it applied. It would be most embarrassing to have schoolgirls tittering with glee whenever you had your pride and joy exposed for all to see...

I tell a personal story here about a New Zealand lamb exhibition at the massive and highly reputable Anuga food fair in Koln, Germany in the early 1990s. Stickers of a winking cartoon lamb were being distributed to passersby with a caption in German that was supposed to say "I love New Zealand lamb". After observing much tittering and mirth I asked a local German-speaker what the caption said. Their translation was a bit more graphic than intended... Most embarrassing for all concerned. Funny now though!

I hear that tattoo parlours have run-out specials on Kingz logos...

Yeah, I'd put in a nod for Ballistic. Had most of mine done by Steve. Excellent work.
My wife had her best one done at Monique's in West Auckland. What I've seen of her work is pretty impressive.

If your worried about the pain, try telling yourself that it is going to hurt like F..k! That's how I went in the first time. Was surprised that it didn't hurt anywhere near what I was expecting. The problem was the next time I went thinking that this is going to be easy..... won't hurt much..... ouch!

While I know the original piece of art is good and is accurate, I have some other lettering that is going to be done by a Japanese/English speaker ... It's based on a quote from the Tale of Genji so that's easier to get a hold of too.

It's some way off yet (it will be this year I hope) but I might get the first bit done and then have the rest added to it....

*shrugs* - I just don't like the pain!

There is a tatts thread somewhere else, I seem to remember? Surprising how many people are "inked". I'm way too much of a coward for that sort of palaver.

My mother, however, has two tatts -- calibration reference marks from when she had a course of radiotherapy.

bit of a cautionary tale on the tatts in foreign languages thing, my missus worked in a hospital in the UK, on their ward was a chinese consultant who she got on very well with, he told a tale about a large english lady was admitted to his care for some non-specific consultation. She had cause to remove her upper clothing in order for him to examine her.
This revealed a tattoo in chinese characters across her ample back, he asked her out of interest what it was meant to say, to which she replied "I thought you would be able to read it, you being chinese and all", to which he made up some dodgy excuse about it being a different script/dialect whatever, to the chinese he spoke, so she enlightened him "it says Grace, its my daughters name". "Very nice", he replied, concluded the exam and bade her farewell.
That lunchtime in the canteen, he tells Tania(my missus) the story, problem was it didnt say Grace at all. the tattooist obviously bein a bit of a wit had written "Elephant" in beautiful scripted characters!

It's been done a few times http://www.soufoaklin.com/tattooartist.html bloody funny though unless you're the one with the Tattoo

Just make sure you get a native Japanese speaker to check it, if you want I can get a native Japanese, Japanese language teacher to check it. Also Chinese and Korean too if any one wants.

We often have a laugh at some poor person expense about the strange character they have tattoed on their skin.

There was one just two days ago on an American TV show, she was proudly showing off her tattoo that she thought meant 'sister' 妹 (actually means younger sister but close enough), but they had tattoed 末 which means 'end'.
They were pretty close that time and easily fixable, just needs a radical in front.

People some times ask for a character that has no direct translation from english, like an ozzy who gutted to find out when he went to Japan that his star sign tattoo of 'Tarus' was just the Chracter for Cow 牛

The tatoo on that girls back that wanted 'princess' says:イエローデブ ero debu
'ero' is from 'erotic' and 'debu' is a derogatory term for 'fat'

But that's a good translation for Year of the Ox (1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997,2009) The Character for Cow is indeed "牛" But it is also the character used for that sign in the Japanese Zodiac....

This is part of the problem... There are connotations when things are taken out of context. You'd feel pretty stupid for saying "I was born in the month of the stinging spider" But that could be a way of saying "I'm a scorpio".

The poor ozzy just didn't realise that there are connotations and connotations. If you are aware that 牛 is the symbol for "year of the ox" because Japanese doesn't distinguish animal gender then you are fine... But you do have to be aware that "ushi" means cow outside of the context (same as "hitsuji" means sheep, but in the context of the Zodiac is translated as "ram"....)
