To rebuild or not to rebuild?

alrighty so in true dunedin fashion some drunken wanker thought my bike would be fun to fuck up so they did...mostly cosmetic damage but a few days before i took her out for a ride and a nasty thumping noise comes from the engine i slow down and it stalls...i climb off let it sit then get it going again and slowly ride it back home with it thumping mostly at low revs...bike is almost at 10,000km

so coupled with the abuse im thinking about making it a project its an rs125 aprilia

what do u guys reakon i should do is rebuilding a smart thing to try myself (i have time) and do u think the sound might be caused by a need for a rebuild or could it be something else??

need help from those wiser than myself

Can't see a choice here - if you don't rebuild then it's just a heap of bits until you do rebuild.

I have a pile of Italian bits in my garage and I'm waiting for more to arrive by mail order then I'll have 600cc of Desmolicious beauty to thrash through the twisties yet again.

2 stroke engines, are not hard to rebuild.

Shouldn't be too bad in parts (well hopefully not)

Should be able to save in labour by doing it your self.

No compete waste of time rebuilding it, as a mater of fact I think you should just take it to the dump, but just to help you out, I will give you $50 for it and someone will be round to collect it tonight, good deal done, close the thread.

(Just in case this is miss intepreated this was a piss take, unless you are keen to take me up on my offer)

If you have got time, a place to work, and you want to I would start by striping down the engine to see what the issue is and what is making the noise, alternativly you could take it to a mechanic and let them have a look at it and diagnose the problem for you and then fix the issue yourself.

For the record Qkkid was in my bed, not the other way round

final last words before i rang suzuki many years ago after blowing my RG......
was $1900 in parts for a bike that owed me $2100......
Thank god they got that sorted now and its cheaper. This was 2000 so wrecked bikes were somewhat rare at that time.
Sold the bike to a mate for $500....and bought the GB

Rebuilds are a fun and its a joy to see the finished project, check out my photos of our project bike. Took 2 months to do, but well worth it. And that was a project of love. We were after the Buell look but sort of ended up looking like about 4 different bikes at the end.

    just my 2 cents...

if its a thumping or knocking- that means your crank bearing is shot usually mate. You might need to just rebuild your crank or get another crank.

Top end might be fine- but at 10 000 km you'd be wise to rebuild anyway... it's only a couple hundred for that bike if you know where to find the parts. Search online it will likely be cheaper to get it from overseas. You need 1 piston 1 ring, base gasket gudgeon/wrist pin bearing, 2 circlips. Take the head and cylinder off as one so you don't need a new head gasket.

    good luck!
