With people mentioning Knofler and Clapton looks like not strictly metal and rock - but mine are (in no particular order):

    Eddie Van Halen
    Vai
    Sach
    Iommi
    Hammett

and of course Hendrix is no 1

Not really a fan of the speed stuff. I remember someone saying words to the effect "why play 100 notes fast when 1 with feeling will do". I think they were talking about Jeff Beck - nuff said!

You forgot Django Reinhardt, but then you probably wouldn't see 43 as young either.

Just watching a DVD of 3G Live in Tokyo which I picked up in the Warehouse. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and John Petrucci - stunning stuff, particularly Petrucci whom I hadn't seen before. The DVD is worth picking up if you see it.

The one guitarist who hasn't been mentioned here is Rory Gallgher, an Irish phenomen from the 70s-80s. Saw him in Dunedin once and he was mesmerising. The equal of Page and Clapton.

Here he is with Jack Bruce-

And now I'm going to watch another DVD from the WH, a little number called - Ozzy Osbourne - Live and Loud.

    (All time favourite) TOM MORELLO

    Honorable mentions.
Slash. (Sorry, but he's an Eric Clapton wannabe)
Carlos Santana (PHENOMINAL skills, just not my cup of tea)
Mark Knofler. (Obviously 80s gay music, but skills no doubt)

While I wouldn't argue with any of the names that have been thrown up, I'd like to add Jeff Beck, this is one of my favourites:

And a newer version with an older Beck and the lovely Joss Stone:

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares? ...He's a mile away and you've got his shoes
