We have an Odyssey too, certainly suits our purposes.
Ours is one of the 7 seaters - some are only 6 seaters.
That fuel burn is pretty standard for them.
There are 5 of us and we wanted something we could use for school trips or take a couple of the kids friends with us to the beach etc. Great for that.

Fold the back seats up and we take all our camping gear and the 5 of us away for a week no problems.

+1 for the Oddysey... they're good family wagons without looking like a family wagon... awesome cars!

Honda Odyssey or Toyota estima/previa, Both well built, Estimas come in 7 and 8 seat options, powerful, practical, reasonable on fuel.

Both are reliable but diesel estimas are not.

I would have concerns about the Mitsubishi.

If I was buying, it would be the best low k odessey or Estima with the back up being the mazda.

The BMW has nothing to do with your question, just something nice to look at whilst you make up your mind.

The Toyota Previa / Estimas are unquestionably reliable... as are the Oddyseys, however the issue I had with the Toyotas is that they look every inch a people mover. Big, fat and ugly. Looks like an almost Van.

What I love about our Oddysey is that it looks like a station wagon, drives like a car and has the added versatility of being a people mover. Its sleek, stylish, comfortable and fun to drive.

However - if you choose a Toyota Previa / Estima then I can send you the obligitary chain of flowers and a photo of the Virgin Mary for your dashboard

wouldnt go near a mitzy with a barg pole probly end up havin a lump a shit GDI motor in it nothing up hassles.
Stay with the toyotas and hondas, mazdas just be carefull with the toyotas common faults we see on them for repairs are rocker cover leaks (on exhuast manifold WOF fail). Make sure plugs are done if close to 100,000 ks platinum plugs and drivers seat and floor needs to come out to get at them good two hours charge time. Only other common thing is the front output shaft for the fan belts p/steering etc flog out causes bad vibration.

mazdas if its a V6 plugs will be a pain to change
And stay well away from Chrysler older one are over weight for the brakes they cook and eat brake pads and rotor for breakfast lunch and dinner.

I guess the question that comes to my mind is do you really need a people mover? eg How many times a year will you be carrying 7? If the answer is 'a few' could you rent one for those times? If its 'every day' then forget this post.

It is a lot of sheet metal to carry around to be driving it empty. My mates V6 AWD Odyssey weighs 2 tonnes. It was great at first but now the eldest daughter drives, the teenagers are doing their own thing and family outings are a thing of the past. They just rattle around in their big ol' MPV. BTW back then my advice to him was: forget the Honda, get that Alfa you have always wanted and enjoy your driving.

i have two young ones, 3 and 1 1/2. stick both car seats in and there is stuff all room for someone else. we have a legacy gt wagon and its not the nicest on gas so were looking at getting something a bit bigger and hopefully beter on gas, by what people are saying they seem to be pointing toward the honda or mazda. problem is the missus wont touch the honda with a 10 ft barge pole, she just doesnt like them. and we dont want a van as such or a 4x4. looking for the most economical as some of the mazdas and mitsis come in a 2.2l or 2.5l. i dont need it to be a rocket

    Bit bloody late now.

    I hate cars. Horrid things.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

I tell you what dude--I'd strongly suggest the Honda STREAM
its a 7 seater but looks more like a honda civic so its pretty stylie.
Another possibility is a Toyota Ipsum --its a 7 seater but doesn't scream it like the others
BOTH of them give really good fuel economy -FOR A PEOPLE MOVER
One other possibility --waay out there is the Toyota spacio 6 seater.
Its basicly a toyota corolla but its got built in kiddy seats.

Can't speak for the new chariots but I used to have an old '89 one as my first car and it was unbelivably tough and reliable. I did tens of thousands of km in it and drove it like an idiot, had a few minor prangs, took it offroading even and it never skipped a beat. Seated 7 legally, 15 illigally. If there was a nuclear appocolypse that ended us all the cockroaches and chariots would be the only thing the remained.

Aha, was going to suggest he come see you.....

From memory, there are a few on the yard that may suit him.

(Oh, and how hard is it to get the 3rd row for a Commodore wagon???)
