    In my experience (stop laughing)

You need to time this to avoid the school holidays. Ferry bookings are expensive and hard to get and as for accomodation?

If you can leave it 'till the end of summer early Autumn you get the best riding weather. However, I'm pretty OK with any time.

400km a day is do-able BUT the run through the Haast is well worth it but can be a long haul.

One option is to fit in one of the excellent SI rallies but that means tents (bleugh)

If we cannot manage a full SI tour this time I would be happy to set up a KB Top O the South tour? 3 to 5 days?

Ten days, Full Island. 400 to 550kms per day. Day of rest somewhere interesting.

I haven't done below Queenstown (OK, Kingston) and feel I should/must.

Thats 13/14 months away But, at THIS stage, I'm keen as Commander Keen on a Keen mission.

It really does sound like one of those holiday trips you have fond memories of forever. Great people, great roads. I'm happy to come whenever. I'll stick some money aside, as it can work out to be rather pricy as a last minute decision.

About the cheap accomodation, might pay to research bike friendly places (ie parking).

Either that or it's the trip from Hell that causes you to give up biking.

I've had both - Trust me, there will be a few simple rules which will avoid the worst of this! (no I'm not a friggin road Nazi just common sense)

Don't worry about your bike. Locking them all together (git the waggons in a circle ma) makes them hard to steal and there are bugger all people about!

Signing up right now! (Part of a NYR to plan to be more spontaneous).

Don't make the accommodation too "cheap". The lumbago objects a bit at times and baulks completely at top bunks or places where you have to walk further than 5m in the dark to take a slash.

And let's not have an intinerary. Let's just either follow the weather around or that blind deaf and dumb kid on the lead bike...

That way it could truly lay claim to being a magical mystery tour!

if peaple dont mind stayin around wellington till about 1 or 2 am then ferry prices go down to about 150 or 200 per person round trip if return time is about the same.

could go cross the ferry at that time then stay in picton for another day then do the ride and the same on the way back across staying at wellington

just an idea im not gonna be able to do it cause i will be at uni and wont be able to bugger of for a few days

It's also the time of the year I curse/ celebrate being born so there's another reason to put it down in my calendar......

Another "association" is doing something very similar and they are leaving next week......

It is a week long trip and they have worked out the expenses to be less than a thousand per head all inclusive, 800 will do but 1000 to be safe. Note though this is taking into account cage petrol requirements.

    ...............

Yes, I agree with you'll such trips are what we may tell our grandchildren about :cool2:

yeah we'd be in for a top of the south ride, more affordable and should be achievable with getting a baby sitter for htat length of time also.

Aye, just a wee bit before Kakanui... The Hall Coastal Backpackers, 1050 Waianakarua Rd, All Day Bay, Oamaru. Bloody great, although they don't have much room. The owners have turned the old barn into an old English pub - has a great feeling.

Also, another place worthy of mention that we staid at the other week was in Makaroa, Makarora Tourist Centre Ltd which is just after Hasst past. Heaps of room and facilities are excellent. We paid $55 for an A-Frame cabin for the night. had a double bed and two singles, a fridge, microwave, heater, table n chairs, very clean and tidy - so I highly recommend.

We did an itinerary for travelling down the West Coast to Invercargill and then back up East. We planned for approximately 300ks a day, however, the first two days we ended up doing 425km and 475km respectively - wasn't good, particularly for Mrs.G. riding pillion! Anyway, if you want a copy (complete with pics and maps) if you think it might be helpful, then let me know.

I think my holidays will be in february. Was tentatively planning on doing a SI trip then. Would be really cool to do a KB one.

Definitely interested. Driven the S.I a lot with wk, always wanted to do it on a bike.

March good time of year, settled weather, not too hot, no schoolkids.

Could do two trips in 1 - a few days around top of SI for those on limited time/budget then the rest move on down the coast after.
Experience......something you get just after you needed it
