yeah that is the only problem with Linux, once it is going theres nothing to fix. Eight Linux systems here, and one winbox with the GST on it (gets booted up once every two months.)
It looks like it uses a lot of RAM, but remember the kernel uses all available RAM to cache everything, so in effect you never have any free RAM. Rest assured, if some application wants some RAM, it will boot some unused junk out of the cache. Its silly to run any modernish system with less than a gig of RAM in it anyway - its so cheap and makes so much difference.
Yeah KDE was always known to be heavier than gnome. If you have the spare horsepower, go KDE for sure.
Most modern distro's will let you run any window manager you like.
Good to see you having fun with Linux. It is amazing what "just works" with it now.
