would you care to elucidate on nature of this 'PC agenda', that you wish to 'abolish'?

heck, that ACT woman was foaming at the mouth trying to suggest how the godless liberals were attempting to sway the political discourse by subverting the language itself (only she was too stupid to put it as elegantly as I did, perhaps she was appealing to the intelligence of her constituents?)

it is my sincere wish that Labour cut a lot of the PC rigmarole, of which I believe the pendulum has swung a little too far. however it is incredibly intellectually dishonest to try and imply some hidden socialist agenda, she is obviously trying to play on the average punters ideals of 'common sense', of which the policies she stands for have little. indeed that sums up right wing politics rather well (esp. the USA), where spin doctors in think tanks dream up ways of making the average constituent furious at an artificially created sense of moral erosion and 'common sense', in order to gain power and enact policies which are in direct opposition to the comman man which was manipulated into voting them into power.

that's my political post for the week.

Good link. We have to much law trying to guide, control, every facit of our lives here in NZ. Look at the Resource management act etc. In order for people to be catered for in life we need less legislation not more. That was my point. People have commented on the politics behind the Political incorrectness of a "political party" running a web sigh for it's own gain. As you will read from many here that's the only way to get a balance. Who cares who starts the discussion to find middle ground you need discussion. You picked up on and took out of context my efforts to point out the importance of public discussion.

As I pointed out before, there are two sad aspects to the article/banner. One is the lack of thought they put into it. The second is the small-minded personal hate that it shows. I'm not trying to touch on an issue of PC tolerance, I'm looking at personal relationships between people, although I acknowledge that it does cross over a bit....

    My 2 cents

    I haven't read through the entire discussion cause I just don't have time at the office, but for those of you who are reading this, here we go;

I have only been in NZ for 6 months, prior to that I have lived in Johannesburg, South Africa for most of my life and I have had enough of political correctness. To me PC is the langauge of cowardice (as Billy Connolly put it), why bother skirting around the issue? If you are fat you are fat, if you are black you are black, if you are bald you are bald, if you are stupid you are stupid. In this day and age we have seen more and experienced more and we should be more open minded to everything life has to offer and we should NEVER have to worry about offending a young, blind, black, pregnant lesbian in a wheel chair.

I'm not saying that it is OK to insult people and to use derogatory remarks but people should stop being so sensitive and get on with life, if you don't like it, don't listen to it. If a radio DJ offends you then change stations, don't get hung up about it.

I myself have been targeted as a racist because I referred to someone once as a black person and not as a "previously disadvantaged individual", I mean what the fuck is this world coming to? I have loads of mates in South Africa who are black and don't mind being called black just like I don't mind being called white!

Whew! That's saved me a bit in counselling fees, good to get that of my chest.

Can I take a straw poll please regarding the following jokes. I now they are not PC (like I care), but are they offensive? And no this is not just a cheap attempt at telling jokes - for a change:

Q: What do you call an Asian that doesn't own a shop?
    A: Doctor

Q: Why don't you ever see any Asian team do well in the football world cup?
A: Because every time they are awarded a corner they open a shop

Now - I know that these jokes generalise (Asians either own shops or are doctors in this case. If anything these jokes claim that Asians are hard working), but are they really offensive? I personally see nothing derogatory with these jokes, but several white PC people I know do. I'd be keen to gauge your opinion.

    Question

I'd actually like to know what people that are against this "PC madness" are actually referring to?

I agree with what outlawtorn & Jamezo & Biff Baff. So I don't understand what you are meaning. Can someone explain? It seems to me we all want a decent society where everyone gets a fair shake of the stick or whatever.

I think from talks me & my mate Jim2 have had I know what people are getting at but, I want examples other than those already given.

Hmmmmmmmmm...I think I've just open a can of worms here!
My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

Helen Clark has a strong tendency to de-sex common terms for people. She refers to Policemen (commonly understood to mean someone who works in the police force, despite gender) as Police-person. I liked Outlawtorn's comment: "... black person and not as a "previously disadvantaged individual".

Political Correctness is trying to come up with labels for people, races, sexual orientations, jobs, etc that describe those things without being "offensive" to everyone. And I have to say that I agree wholeheartedly with Outlawtorns comments.

You bloody betcha it costs us, Biff_Baff's comment is an absolute classic and proof of cost. Sure that was UK, but we're not that different. I'm sure there were (are) plenty of better causes to spend that money on.

Mate, at their polling they ain't gonna be a problem. I suggest you pull your head out of the instant dismissal sand because I suspect you could make more of a mark by being proactive, regardless of any perceived political associations. I think party politics is crap anyway, they should all be independents (provided their intelligent & educated).
