The disparity in the example is that it's deemed ok (and legal) to infer that an entire nation enjoys sex with sheep (an illegal act), while it would be illegal to tell the joke (in the UK at least) and offensive if the nation at the butt end of the joke were deemed a "minority" in that they originated from overseas. By this I mean from nations other than Europe, Russia, the US, Oz & NZ at least. I guess because we "whities" are all deemed as the same I guess and don't need protecting against potentially offensive jokes, even if they do undermine, take issue, make fun of our religion, skin tone, ethnicity etc

    Does this make sense?

"Making fun" - well it's a joke so I guess you've got me there, but the punch line is hardly condescending (unless you're an Asian football fan I guess), but generalises that Asian's are either shop owners or doctors. Both worthy professions.

A case in point though, my Pakistani friend (an Asian) found it amusing, not insulting and generalising in a somewhat positive sense. But you (I guess) are a little concerned about the fact that the jokes may have a negative tone to them, yet you're white. Whose to say what whether this joke is offensive of not, only Asian's I guess.

I wouldn't say these jokes in public just in case I did offend someone. That is unless we were discussing race or general PC related issues as we are here.

I've got another example of a joke in a similar vein - a bit deeper and one which may offend Arab's. Yet it was told, on national TV, by an Arab (Iraqi) as an example of humour which white's though too offensive to repeat, yet Arab's (ok so I guess he generalised) found amusing if not somewhat
    unsettling.

reminds me of that little scene in Family Guy I saw once: peter being lectured by a black guy "hey man, that is OUR word."

it's obvious that this woman has little idea what she is talking about, in a short reading session I easily found many roffle-inducing innacuracies.

let me get this straight, the communists invented political correctness to avoid offending people? they would brand their enemies as rascists to intimidate them? BULL SHIT! the communists would label you an enemy of The Party, have a mock trial, then shoot you in the back of the head. they couldn't give a flying fuck about offending people.

    Legal???

Yes you do need protection like anyone who is being victimised or insulted or threatened due to their ethnicity, gender or age.

Ok these are very good points. Yes I'm white and very proud of my Scottish heritage. I understand what you're saying but, I guess for me it's about making sure that I don't offend others and treat them the way I want to be treated. I can tell you that I would get pretty sick of being the brunt of jokes all the time but, then maybe thats just me.

At the end of the day I don't think anything is black and white or has a simple.

I have a problem.... the little icon that indicates that people can talk to me on MSN shows a male. Now I am clearly female. I demand that this icon is changed - I don't care how much it costs to do it. And because of severe emotional injury due to the distress this has caused, I want lots and lots of money and a Ducati. And then I will put in another claim in 6 months due to severe emotional trauma from being 'bought off', and I will need reparation in the amount of lots and lots and lots and lots of money and 2 Ducatis....

Yes you're within the bounds of what is deemed legally acceptable by calling the Welsh sheep shaggers, the Scottish mean, Irish drunk, French smelly, Yanks egotisical war mongers etc etc, but if you say anything derogatory about a minority you're breaking the law.

I don't understand that one either.

heck, that ACT woman was foaming at the mouth trying to suggest how the godless liberals were attempting to sway the political discourse by subverting the language itself (only she was too stupid to put it as elegantly as I did, perhaps she was appealing to the intelligence of her constituents?)

it is my sincere wish that Labour cut a lot of the PC rigmarole, of which I believe the pendulum has swung a little too far. however it is incredibly intellectually dishonest to try and imply some hidden socialist agenda, she is obviously trying to play on the average punters ideals of 'common sense', of which the policies she stands for have little. indeed that sums up right wing politics rather well (esp. the USA), where spin doctors in think tanks dream up ways of making the average constituent furious at an artificially created sense of moral erosion and 'common sense', in order to gain power and enact policies which are in direct opposition to the comman man which was manipulated into voting them into power.

that's my political post for the week.
I am generalising here, but political correctness is usually a smokescreen for agendas that breakdown societies fabric, such as divisive legislation, social engineering etc, we are all being influenced by the media whether we like it or not, have we all been hideously damaged by getting a smack on the bum when we stepped out of line for example as children?. Do we really believe that violence breeds violence?, how many victims of nazi germany turned violent for example, even the fact you ask me to clarify what I posted leads me to think you are being deliberately antagonistic, in order to show me up as being old fashioned or whatever. I am not alone in my views, and they are based on my experiences to date.

I tend to agree with you Jamezo, looked to me to be too "sweeping generalisation" to be really factual. But...PC HAS gone too far. Lets beat it back into submission shall we? A little spice for the (mis)steaks of blatant capitalism.

I work in the Distribution / transport industry in days gone by transport companies gave out calenders of scantily dressed ladies ( I like that word scantily) hope I spelt it right? have you noticed how all the nice words like that have such a nice feel? like bum and boobs such warm words and well rounded whereas posteria and mamorys dont feel the same or do they? I digess anyway nowerdays we get calenders with pictures of Trucks! big Mac trucks with some hairy driver at the wheel. they are so popular with the storeman ( sorry storespersons) and so we are forced to be closet perverts when really we want to be real perverts in a tasteful way.
In some cultures women have to cover up like in Iran they will be hung for showing any bear flesh. and who imposes those rules? men! and then they get all excited it they see an ankle? its all relative PC stupidity.
In the workplace women now dictate the rules on whats acceptable and whats not and men are supressed into the correctness of it all. I am a liberal and I think the minority is now calling the shots. I do however think that children need to be protected and so we rule that no minors are allowed in the warehouse and we have no women currently but welcome them they just don't want to be storemen ( storespersons) and them that do from time to time like to have pictures or naked firemen (firepersons) its all to silly for words.
