i tend to tour in a leather jacket, so i have a bright yellow rain coat. for around town/short trips, i have rjays jacket and pants. the pants were worn through a hail storm last year at 100k and didnt let a single drop through. i wear them when touring as well.

my gloves however are shite, and my hands are often warmer if im wearing fingerless gloves if its raining. my full gloves stay cold, and my fingers end up going numb and stiff.

I have leathers and a one piece Revit oversuit.

Used it on my last SI trip down for the brass monkey. Kept me bone dry, and also did a great job of keeping me warm. Even wore it when it wasn't raining for cutting the wind chill out.

Cordura Jacket with old yachting overtrou... (Musto). Bottoms are perfect as they are designed to be pulled over sailing boots..

I recently got a pair of rain-off over gloves: http://www.rain-off.com/prdt_dsptn.htm
They really do work as advertised - keeps the rain off my gloves, and the wind (keeping my hands warmer), and the grip is really good too.

My leathers are my wet weather gear. For light rain, nothing else is needed, and my leathers are good for up to three hours in a west coast downpour.

If I expect to be more than three hours in heavy rain, then the cheap Warehouse rainproofs over the top are good.

Leathers with "Rainbird" jacket and trou to go over the top in the rain. Very light and completely waterproof. Got them from Para, but they might not be available any more.....

I've found that the south Island can throw up some real surprises. Have done the Burt Munro twice now and have found to be riding in torrential downpoor in areas like the Catlins and the West Coast on the way back.

I use Tecknic gear and this is very good gear. But if you are travelling for a few days you want to be able to stay dry as much as possible betwen stops. I know the gear dries almost overnite if staying in a motel.

I used the onepiece Spool suit and it keeps you very dry. Its a bit of a struggle to get it on but hey who cares

It stows nicely and dries fast. Paid about $120 here in Wellington for it.

    Good luck with your decision.

    Eric

How much more does it rain in the Nth Island than the Sth? Can someone compare that for me?

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.
