Can you retro-fit a grab rail to a bike without permanent modification? Basically I'd love to have a grab rail for the R1, so the missus can use it when we're 2up, but remove it when I change the seat back to the cowl.....

Yeah, but you won't like it much.
Ventura's pack rack system has a grab rail attachment. The L brackets and grab rail are quite unobtrusive on my bike, and it would probably end up the cheapest and easiest way to get a grab rail.
A company called Renntec does grab rail for your R1
They're in the UK so those double figure prices pretty quickly become 3 figure ones once shipping gets involve.
