Working in Iraq Oz or elsewhere?

Well, I reckon it's time to up stakes and f*ck off. Anyone know anything about moving to Oz? Or anywhere else for that matter? I haven't got any ties so I'm even thinking about working in Iraq. Good money if you can get it. Anyone have any contacts, that they can help me with?

    Well thats something different.

Ive seen plenty of "Hi - I'm new here post" when people join.

But Ive never seen a "Ive had enough I'm fucking off" thread as a first post.

edit - just clicked post count = zero - but you have been posting in R+R . Best of luck with the new job and glad to see you came out of the other mess and are moving forward.

Yup - Iraq's good money - for a reason. If you have the skills then you know the risks.

If you don't then... I'd suggest Oz.

If you like sand, then Dubai is probably a good compromise.

    What do you do?

Guy from work has just returned to Iraq for a year project managing new power station building.

Mates are in Dubai now. Love it and hate it. Good money, but all booze is fucking expensive. So if you drink, you will drink all your money.

Good question - this matters a lot.

Big money in mining towns in Aussie, but also big social problems (drugs, booze, etc)

    Aussie or Dubai.
I have seen guys go to the war zones then leave in the first week. They ended up paying the flights and visas. Bit expensive for a week lol.
Seek.co.nz then you look at the overseas jobs.
    Oh hi anyway.

An Uncle and an Aunt have just taken off over there (education though, not building) -- well, nearby (Abu Dhabi).

One slightly funny thing they were saying about the building industry that non-Muslim Kiwis could take advantage of was about Ramadan. During Ramadan (Muslim festival where you can't eat (or even drink water, is it?) during the daytime), all the Muslim guys (obviously a large proportion of the workers) on the construction sites only do 6 hour days. Ramadan goes on for about a month I think, so that's a fair amount of labour hours missing.

The funny bit though is that after Ramadan, they have to do 10 hour days to make up all the time

The biggest problem they have is keeping staff. As they push to very tough time lines.
I use to stop over every few months see a mate of mine there. He left becouse of the time frames you were given.

Its one thing being there with the backing and support of a whole country, another story if your their as a disposable contractor. Be prepared to get yourself out of any shit because no one else will.

I'm in Project Management/Construction (not at the top level though) I have good management and communications skills. I'd work in NZ if I could get a decent job. Plenty of experience but no quals. It's going to be hard but I'm prepared to work hard. The risks are negligible (in my eyes) in other words I'm prepared to take them. I have no idea who to contact to discuss possibilities though.
    Can anyone help?

P.s. I have limited internet access at the moment but I'll try to get to a net caf or something.
