I doubt that anyone in a position of responsibility could let that sort of injury rate continue unless they were some kind of idiot. Believe it kiddies, the injuries were very very common and not just minor scrapes and bruises......the game had to be stopped.......this was in rural mid Northland BTW.....and they did play it on the asphalt come to think of it......among other places....
And yet it never had to be stopped in the century before that?

Kids' games follow fashions and sometimes they get out of hand. Instead of banning rough games like bullrush for ever, how about curbing the excesses as and when necessary? Eg: No bullrush on the asphalt? No bullrush for a few months while things calm down? No it had to be stopped because safety isn't only important, it's the only thing that's imporrtant.

Man I loved bullrush at school.
I used to like being one of the first in the middle. Was neat watching everyone run towards you, you lined up a victim and whammo.......was excellent tackling practice for rugby.

WASSN' ME!!!!!!! I was not in the habit of using the strap anyway...and we had no effluent drain near the school....but I would have liked to see that feat of yours.....

I think what killed it at that particular school was the gruesome compound fracture that happened to be the third fracture in one week........and who said it was banned forever? Not me......
And don't think we hadn't tried to tame the game......but it WAS Northland after all...ask Nodrog!!

How dare you respond to my eloquence with facts?!

But I get the impression bullrush is widely banned to appease the great god Safety. So what I said still stands, I think, though perhaps it doesn't apply to the case you were talking about.

Oh yes, you are right there BJ.....e.g when I was teaching we had no safety stuff under the jungle gyms and adventure playgrounds - worked on the theory that it discouraged falling off if there was hard ground beneath. And funnily enough, very few kids busted their bums on those things....it is only in more recent times that things like OSH have come along and turned everyone into victims....if some kid climbs your tree on your property and falls out of it and stubs his/her toe it is YOUR fault for having the tree, NOT the bloody kid's fault...that sort of mentality totally makes me PUKE!!! Dammit, we climbed everyone's trees with or without permission and if we fell out we got the hiding for trespassing and being stupid enough to fall out anyway......nobody is expected to take responsibility for their own actions any more. F**king stupid in my opinion.....grrsnortrantraveoinksqueeeellllll!!!!
